The future is the future. I want to be back in Washington, but weird things happen in free agency. If Antawn is not back, then there’s no point in me coming back because he’s part of my success, too. When you’re doing pick and roll with a player like him, they can’t double you, they can’t trap you because you have a pick and pop guy who can shoot the three at your four position. My success is because of him too. If he doesn’t come back, I’m not coming back.
I know everybody is focusing on whether I’m coming back, but I’m focusing on what he’s doing. If he doesn’t come back, then I’m not coming back.
Gil's latest blog post. The whole thing is a doozy, so I recommend everyone check it out. Later on, Gilbert responds to his critics, and that's always fun to read.

If I may say so
This is classic Gilbert.
Deep down, you know he’s trying to say something very unselfish. He’s trying to say that the Big 3 all make each other better, and taking away one hurts the other two. But when he says things like “He has a lot more open looks when I’m on the floor,” and “I’m a three-time All-Leaguer, I think you put that on anybody’s team and you automatically make them better,” he just sounds like a prick.
I think we’re past the point where his teammates care about how he phrases things, but you still have to be more careful than that.

gil...
really needs to stop talking, you have an agent to tell you not to say things like this, thats what the 4% is worth. A totally worthless statement, if the wizards told gil theyd give him the max but theyd have to get rid of antawn, he would turn it down? He just puts himself and everyone else connected to the situation in an awkward position by saying things that should be private.

I think the two more important points from the post are...
1) Battier needs to stop shaving his head and 2) the ridiculous explanation for the 7 crosses tattooed on his knee.
But seriously, I’m not too concerned. Gil thinks aloud, everyone knows it, and I don’t think what he says matters that much when it comes to negotiating a deal. Wiz need to do right by Gil otherwise he’s bolting. He wants AJ back b/c he has a high comfort level with him, and he’s not afraid to say it. I don’t think much of this matters in the end. What matters is that Gil feels like the Wiz want him.
The only thing that really does scare me is that Gil is flaky enough to make a snap decision. I could see some other team coming in with a big offer and wooing him with some phone calls and getting him to change his mind. Ernie must know this and needs to stay on top of this negotiation, ESPECIALLY since Gil isn’t using an agent.
Getting buckets since 2003.

I'm worried about Gil, too, without an agent
I’m more worried that Ernie will low ball him, and Gil will take offense and refuse to negotiate any further.

Yeah
I’m a bit worried about that too. It’ll be like Larry Hughes, except Gilbert is much less expendable.

Who cares? If Antawn leaves there’s no point in keeping Gil, we should just pursue a different course of action for the future and put pieces around Caron Butler. This year’s free agent class is terrific, we should be able to at least get by if Ernie Grunfeld does his job correctly.

Wait, huh?
Gilbert is in the prime of his career. I see no reason why him and Caron couldn’t play together potentially.

The prime of his career? You call this past season the prime of his career? He played like 11 games.
Also, I’m sorry if this ends up being a double post, I posted the first time and it didn’t show up.

He's 26
And lots of players overcome injuries, so I don’t see how this season means much. Hell, Jordan missed 64 games in one of his seasons.

The amount of players who overcome injuries are less than the amount of players who’s careers end because of them. You hear the success stories and are reminded of them pretty often but you forget about the players with unbelievable potential, such as a Grant Hill, who succumb to injury and are never the same player.

Really?
For every Grant Hill, there’s an Amare Stoudamire. For every Darius Miles, there’s a Zach Randolph. Hell, Jason Kidd and John Stockton both had microfracture surgery and returned better. For every Penny Hardaway, there’s a Mark Price.
I actually think it’s the reverse. We remember those that don’t recover, but forget all the examples of people that do because that’s what’s supposed to happen with great athletes.

mark price
as a bullets fan, that’s a very interesting example of someone coming back from an injury. what’d we trade for him again? a first round pick? and then he never played for the bullets.
did you mean brent price?

Nah, I meant Mark Price
And I meant his first injury while with Cleveland during the 1990-91 season, when he tore his ACL, only to return strongly the next season.

Yea, but....
Mark Price played a whole 7 games in a glorious Bullets uniform
And yes…we traded our first round pick, #12 in 1996.
Cleveland drafted major bust Vitaly Potapenko with it.
Guess who went 13? Kobe Bryant
Oh yea…
Peja Stojakovic went 14
Steve Nash went 15
Jermaine O’Neal went 17
Zydrunas Ilgauskas went 20
Ahhhhh….hindsight, ain’t it grand?

So you want to take a 50-50 shot with Arenas? Imagine if we sign him for 6 years 14 mil and he spends most of that time sitting on the bench rehabbing that knee.

My point is
It’s more than 50-50, it’s like 80-20 based on past history, if not more. I’d say it’s really 90-10.
And like someone said in an earlier thread, if he’s no longer a superstar, but merely a very good player, that contract becomes more tradeable.

80-20 is going a little bit too far, I’d say it’s something around 65-35.
If he becomes that injured guy on the bench which I fear he’ll become then it will be near impossible to trade the contract. I like your point about trading the contract but the thing is Gilbert will either be a superstar in this league or be labeled as a chucker. He wants quick offensive possesions at the point and if that means jacking up a 35 footer so be it. If he’s no longer Agent 0 we got problems.
I know that he did a pretty good job back in April but if he finds out that he’ll never become that superstar again, how quickly will his confidence on his jumper go away?

I guess I place more stock in Gil than you do
I don’t want to make this a dialogue (because I want others to respond too), but I’m not worried about a loss of “confidence.” I don’t care to label Gilbert, and I don’t see why he couldn’t change his game to fit into a slower-paced team (and anyway, is that really what we want? We were the fifth-best offense in the league in 07 with him doing his thing).
I severely doubt Gilbert turns into Steve Francis (which seems to be the risk you’re suggesting). He works too hard to do that.
