Arenas, who is seeking a long-term max deal that could exceed $100 million, said he will be turning in the early termination papers by the June 30th deadline so he will be a free agent when the period begins on July 1.
Well that's jolly. At least we know for sure.

I'm surprised -
I thought for sure he wouldn’t opt out after the season he had. I will also be surprised if he gets a max deal from the Wizards. I’m not sure I would want them to do that. But anything involving Gil is subject to change.

Don't Do It, Ernie
I’m a big Agent Zero fan, but signing Arenas to a huge max contract is a huge gamble. Arenas’s knee has been consistently bothering him since his injury over a year ago, and he has yet to show that he can be the same player he was before. Some athletes never get over big injuries, especially ones to their knees. The Wizards have proven that they can play at a high level even without him, and they can use his cap space to sign a couple of solid low-post players that would probably do more to help their playoff chances than a healthy Arenas.
Then again, if he does make a full recovery and signs with another team, I wouldn’t want to face his new team. So it is going to be a tough decision for Ernie.

Yeah, that's the problem
I’m not surprised he’s opted out—with the knee, he wants long-term job security, rather than just one more year. I think the Wiz should give that, but only if it isn’t a backbreaking max deal. His comment about taking a pay cut to keep Antawn on the team is the one that matters most.
Paying Gil six years of max money is out of the question right now. We haven’t seen the version of Gil who was clearly worth that kinda cash in the past year and a half + two surgeries. I think the franchise can succeed with him as our star point guard, but only if he can be the Gil he was before those surgeries. With the salary cap being what it is, if we sign him for six years at max dollars, he could be this franchise’s Grant Hill.
$12-15 mil for six years. Give Gil the job security he wants, lock him in and make him a very rich man. And give the franchise enough wiggle room to sign some good complementary players, so the guy can compete for the championship that he wants.
