my proposal

  1. HIRE NEW TRAINING STAFF
  2. have them check out gil's knee.
  3. assuming it's good, resign gil + twan to reasonable contracts.
  4. get etan back on the court.
  5. get blatche in the weight room.
  6. let mason walk (i love him but there's no room).
  7. draft brandon rush (was projected in 20's but now it looks like phoenix might snatch him up earlier than 18. i'll stick with this suggestion).
  8. cut mcguire or pech. (sucks to do it, but hey...)
  9. get additional stopgap backup point guard.
  10. utilize new training staff and finish top 3 in conference with healthy team.

Sounds good, but show me how the money breaks down.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

the only money issues to address

are signing gil and tawn and i don’t have anything to add about that that hasn’t already been said. use leverage against gil to avoid max money. try to sign AJ for around 10 million with no raises (or frontloaded) for 3-4 years.

my main points are:
1 – i like rush as a caron backup (fixed rookie salary) that could help immediately
2 – we need to stay healthy – maybe a new staff would help
3 – i’d be willing to part with dmac or pech for a backup point as AD or gil will inevitably sprain an ankle or something at some point during the season
4 – getting etan back helps our front court enough in my opinion

i don’t see roster space for a mid-level exception signing nor do i have any bright ideas on that front.

ultra boring proposal but the wheeling and dealing will mostly take place next year i imagine.

by DarrellWalkerFan on May 30, 2008 5:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

oh

i guess i should say that backup point guard is really just a stop gap. one year deal for small money.

by DarrellWalkerFan on May 30, 2008 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What I meant was

Tell me exactly how much you’d sign Gil and Antawn for and exactly how much our team salary will be.

Also, show me the depth chart. In your final proposal, would you, in fact, cut McGuire (I don’t think you can cut Pech because he was a first-round pick)?

I do agree mostly with the general idea, though I’d rather keep McGuire around and draft a point guard. But that’s just me.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

i'll balk on the exact salary stuff

if it voids my proposal from the competition, that’s fine – give it to someone more deserving (i doubt most would like my proposal that much anyhow. mostly trying to make a joke about the training staff).

i definitely understand the drafting a point guard play, but when caron is out (either on bench or injured), the wiz have struggled mightily on offense (in my observation), so i have no faith in dmac being a solid caron backup. i see brandon rush stepping in at the three spot and being able to knock down shots and hold his own defensively and on the boards right away – for cheap.

by DarrellWalkerFan on May 30, 2008 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess it depends where you want to go cheap

If I were in this contest, I’d leave just enough money to sign someone like Pietrus for a short-term deal to be Caron’s backup while drafting a PG at 18. Your idea is to do the opposite – draft a wing like Rush and get a third PG on the cheap.

Either one works, though I personally would rather have a vet and a young guy in both spots. Under your proposal, you’d have two young guys backing up Caron.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

definitely makes a lot of sense

but i gave up on pietrus two years ago (i kept drafting him on my fantasy teams). he can’t dribble, he can’t pass, and he can’t shoot. he tries to be like bowen and shoot set shot threes from the corner, but i don’t see that working in the wizards offense.

i honestly haven’t looked too hard at available free agent small forwards, but the names i’ve seen cast around either seem unattainable or undesirable (to me) so i’d prefer to draft a guy that i think can step right in and contribute.

between that and what we’ve already got in the frontcourt i think we’d be alright at the three spot. and you never know, rush might surprise people in his rookie year like paul pierce did.

FA pool

“the names i’ve seen cast around either seem unattainable or undesirable”

Great observation…. but your statement applies to the entire Free Agent pool, not just the SF’s…

Rook

Nope – You can’t just release Pecherov. As a 1st round pick, has a guaranteed 2-year contract (with team options for 2 more years).

It’s my understanding that McGuire also signed a guaranteed deal for 3-years (with a team option for 1 additional year).

You can trade them (although not sure who would want them); but you can’t just release them.

by Rook6980 on May 31, 2008 7:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You lost me at cut mcguire or pech

That will never happen and the potential they have shown Ernie G will never do it. McGuire’s all round game will only get better and right now as a rebounder and defender you just don’t cut those types with no compensation.

by LoneWiz54 on May 31, 2008 8:52 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed with the previous two

There is absolutely no reason to cut either one of those guys.

The Wiz have enough roster space, and I believe that both are still eligible for some D-League action.

by Truth About It on Jun 1, 2008 1:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i forgot

about the inactive list. but if we’ve got 11 other guys healthy, i see one of those guys on it next year.

and i think you can waive a guy and still pay his contract out. but you guys are right, that isn’t going to happen while they are under contract.

still, i don’t see both of those guys on the active roster all of next year, and this is what i was getting at – unless i’m wrong about how many active people you can carry:

arenas
stevenson
butler
jamison
haywood
daniels
young
rush
songaila
blatche
thomas
macguire
——
pecherov

i’ve seen some potential from macguire, but i’ve seen pretty much zero from pecherov. he played pretty well in the win against the knicks at home, but that’s it. he lost me in the last game of the year against orlando when he looked completely lost trying to defend a simple pick and roll run by orlando’s second and third stringers. he couldn’t do it. not even close. and he has no offense other than hoisting up errant jumpers. he’s a likable fella, but i think ernie whiffed on that one.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Jun 2, 2008 10:16 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

oops

forgot to list the 3rd string point guard in the above. so, either you can have more than 12 guys active for a game, or both mcguire and pecherov might be spending a lot of time on the inactive list next year.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Jun 2, 2008 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea, the kid needs work.....

But I wouldn’t call Opec a whiff just yet….I’ll give the kid some time.

Question is, will he take D-League action knowing that he could be playing in Europe. And does he have a choice?

Now Peter John Ramos….you could say that guy is a whiff, but I guess that his size was worth taking a chance on at the time.

by Truth About It on Jun 2, 2008 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

voice of reason

yeah, you’re right, he’s definitely no party john (although ramos was a second rounder), and we should give him another year (particularly since he’s under contract), but i’d be surprised if we see much of opec on the court next year and then eg will have to decide on that option…

assuming etan is healthy and blatche doesn’t disappear in some way, i already see a logjam in the front court. (yikes!)

on that note, i woke up this morning thinking roy hibbert is a poor man’s calvin booth.

Very Funny
on that note, i woke up this morning thinking roy hibbert is a poor man’s calvin booth.

Calvin Booth is a poor man’s Calvin Booth.

Cal Booth

Calvin Booth is 6’11” and has played 9-years in the NBA. At his best (early in his career) , he gave 12-15 minutes of hard nosed defense. A good shot blocker. Efficient scorer, with a very good shooting percentage. 7 ppg, 4-5 rpg.

He’s had a solid NBA career..

If Roy Hibbert (who is 7’2”) lasts 9-years in the NBA, he should be considered a good pick for someone in the lower part of the 1st round of the Draft.

by Rook6980 on Jun 3, 2008 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

On how many teams? Can’t act like Booth’s 9 years have all been invaluable service for one team. He’s bounced around plenty. So you’d be picking thgat guy in the first round and he wouldn’t be with you more than 3 years…

by Jheiser3 on Jun 4, 2008 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Point remains

The point remains that Cal Booth has been in the NBA for 9-years….

Let’s remember that he was a second round picks (35th overall) – not bad that he lasted 9-years in the league…. When he was drafted, many scouts called him “stiff”, “too slow”, “not athletic enough”, etc…

At pick # 18 – the Wizards can only HOPE they get a player that can contribute from the bench…. if he lasts 9-years in the league, that would be a plus.

As for only staying for 3-years:
Nick Young was picked #16 ….. The Wizards signed him to a guaranteed salary through 2008-09… but they have two (2) team option years, and can make a qualifying offer to keep him through 2012 – effectively keeping him 5-years. More than enough time to find out if he’s worth the next contract. They can do the same with this year’s pick.

I would give him another chance too -

I believe his ankle injury was still bothering him for most of the season. Another year will be very telling even though I’m not entirely sold on him.

by ooba on Jun 2, 2008 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He has no choice. He needs to play. If we had had any money to pay another bench 4/5 this past season Pech would have been in the D-League all year. At least he should have been.

I see no point in cutting players who make almost no money, especially after their first year in the NBA. Look at the Laker bench. its full of late 1st and second rounders who have been groomed to be role players. Vujacic (27th), Farmar (20s), Turiaf (2nd), and Walton (2).

by Jheiser3 on Jun 4, 2008 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if

pech turns out to be as good as any of vujacic, turiaf, or walton that will way exceed my expectations at this point.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Jun 5, 2008 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Roster requirements

NBA teams are required to carry a minimum of 13 players and a maximum of 15 players.

12 players can be declared “active”.. the rest must be declared “inactive”.

The composition of the Inactive List can change on a game-by-game basis

I like this proposal

And if Brandon Rush is picked by the Suns. I’ve read some good things about Nicolas Batum.

by Lukbuster on Jun 2, 2008 12:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Batum

I’ve been reading up on Batum too. Pronounced Nee-colah Ba-toom. Also watched some highlights of him on Youtube. The kid is an athlete and an all around player.
