Knicks - Bulls Trade

Why would either team make this trade?

Knicks Get:

  • Kirk Hinrich (4 years, $37.5 million left)
  • Andres Nocioni (5 years, $36.5 million left)
  • Thabo Sefolosha (3 years, $8.5 million - rookie contract)
  • 9th Pick in 2nd Round (39th Overall) -- Knicks do not own a 2nd rounder this year

Bulls Get:

  • Stephon Marbury (1 year, $20.8 million) -- Bulls would cut Marbury and would be out from under the contracts of Hinrich and Nocioni
  • 6th Overall Pick

The Bulls draft Rose with #1 and let's say.....O.J. Mayo who is currently going 6th on Draft Express.

Your Bulls (plus cap room):

  1. Luol Deng
  2. Derrick Rose
  3. Tyrus Thomas
  4. Drew Gooden
  5. Larry Hughes
  6. Joakim Noah
  7. OJ Mayo
  8. Ben Gordon

The Knicks would still need to make many other moves, but they get three hard-nosed players in return. Not sure if Hinrich can make it in New York, but perhaps D'Antoni can revive his career.

Marbury

I would guess that D’Antoni is going to try and use this huge expiring contract to get some of his own guys, especially now that Rose is out of the picture. I doubt the Bulls deal with the Knicks either, especially since it seems like Reinsdorf was a little miffed by the way the D’Antoni situation worked out.

I see Marbury’s contract headed back to the Suns in a package for Diaw and/or Barbosa.

Now that the Bulls are going to be picking either Michael Beasley or Derrick Rose, that puts some interesting players on the trade block. Could we swing a deal for Kirk Hinrich or Tyrus Thomas?

I’m not sure if we have the numbers to make it work, but Hinrich would be a stud as a backup PG and would be great if we want to run Gil at the 2. Thomas wouldn’t be our low post scoring threat, but you would have to love his defense and hustle. Not to mention he’s a freak athlete. He may be an arrogant, greedy bastard but it doesnt seem to affect his play too much.

I'd love Hinrich and Thomas on our team

As Thomas is really underrated and exactly the type of player who could morph into a stud in a different environment, but I don’t see how we can pull together the assets necessary to make a trade.

Maybe they’d take Jamison for those two. One can dream, can’t they?

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Good points

Yea, I considered that the biggest roadblocks are that Hinrich and Nocioni are not “D’Antoni players” - along with the Reinsdorf thing.

I think Hinrich would be great on the Wizards…..I think someone else has mentioned this before.

But he can play decent defense…..and he can shoot, but always seems to be in a slump.

I'm not sure about you...

But I’m always an advocate of getting players like Hinrich. I think he is an excellent point guard. Yeah he was in a horrible slump this year, and that’s the first year I really remember him shooting so poorly. He always seemed dead on to me in years past, correct me if I’m wrong. This is where us “feel” guys look to you “stat” guys.

Honestly, I think that Hinrich is one of a few players on the Bulls that just need to get the hell out of Chicago. I would imagine that playing for Scott Skiles long enough would make anyone hate basketball.

I’d say this is a perfect buy low scenario. Obviously his contract is somewhat big, but you know what I mean.

Cap Room?

I know the Knicks haven’t been concerned about it lately – but with a new GM, they might be concerned about it. They’re taking a lot of contracts back of players that might not fit in D’Antoni’s system.

The Washington Wizards: providing career scoring nights for unknown opposing bench players since 2004.

True

As Hinrich and Nocioni have longer contracts…...which are also front-loaded and decrease in amount each year…..not sure if that makes a difference.

But both Heinrich and Nocioni are Base Year Contracts. They only count for half (I think) in a trade. Chicago would need to add 4 or 5 Mil to get to 20. I thought you might be thinking of the Knicks making a play for the #1 pick…

I'm pretty sure

That neither is a BYC player. Nocioni definitely isn’t, because he was never drafted … his five-year deal began right away.

Hinrich was a BYC player last year after signing his extension, but that year has passed. Now, his contract is normal. Anyone in the Class of 2004 who signed contracts is a BYC (e.g. Devin Harris).

Nocioni was a BYC this year as was Heinrich. I didn’t realize that they lose their base-year designation after one year. If so that means Collison isn’t either.

Heinrich

I always felt the Heinrich would be a good running mate with Gil. They’d be able to switch off duties at 1 and 2 depending on the match ups and situation. And I like Heinrich’s efforts on defense. Got to get that shooting percentage back up though.
