Open thread: Regular season game 75

Read this.  And this.

Lines are Wizards by 10.5 and 208 on the over/under.

I've got nothing else.  Maybe Arenas plays after all.

Update [2008-4-2 19:18:9 by Pradamaster]: Oh jeez. Just got the e-mail from the Times that Gil is indeed playing tonight. Ivan says so too.

Se7en and cuppettcj, bravo.

Almost immediately
We become an up-tempo team with Gilbert in the lineup.

Observations from the first quarter
  1. Gilbert can still shoot the lights out.
  2. Gilbert still can't play much defense.

Despite number 2, I'm still ecstatic to see him on the court again.

Anybody else having a good time right now?

It's sad how much my emotions go up and down with the Wizards, but this is awesome.

This is a Nightmare
Let's see if the entire starting lineup for the Wizards can get hurt in the last few seconds of this game.

I just saw that bucket.  Great.

Might I add.....

Fuck.

That last shot was Gil's fault....what the hell was he doing leaving Sessions and doubling Bogut with 1.1. left? I love ya Gil, but you're an idiot when it comes to defense.

And while he played well offensively
He definitely hurt us defensively today.  Milwaukee was +8 when Gilbert was in the game tonight.

That wasn't the only play where it happened.

OMFG
there are no words to describe this one. Emotions from the highest of highs to lowest of lows. Arenas leaves man - lifetime scrub hits game winner. We can only hope DS and AJ are okay. If you'll excuse me I'm going to get a drink.

Why Can't the Wizards Play 4th Quarter Defense?
Why can't the Wizards put away crappy teams?

Why can't the Wizards stop turning the ball over late in games?

Why can't the Wizards stay healthy?

Why can't the Wizards ever close out a season on a hot streak?

Why can't the Wizards ever play with a modicum of consistency?

Why ask why?

On the bright side
Toronto also blew a big lead to an inferior opponent tonight.

So technically, we're still ahead of them.

Ehh
I'm not sure I'd go that far...depends if Stevenson and Jamison can't play down the stretch.

I was at that game
and it hurt...
That play from Ruffin may be the worst single play i've seen on a basketball court.

by five by five on Apr 3, 2008 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

slept on it
You guys are probably right.  Though, as a relatively new fan (3rd season of watching almost every game), I had not seen anything like this.  I saw Stevenson lying across the bench, Jamison (our rock) being escorted over, and thought about Caron's arm possibly being hurt just a few minutes prior.  It looked like our nucleus had just come back from war.  I evan had a dream about losing to Miami last night.

Depending on how hurt the our two sons are, this bucks game has worse implications; however, that Ruffin-Raptors moment was "the worst single play [we've] seen on a basketball court."

by Lukbuster on Apr 3, 2008 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What had happened....

DS stepped on AD's foot, hurting is ankle, on a scramble for the rock at the Bucks end before a jump-ball between Caron and Sessions was called with 6 seconds left.

AJ got hurt (I'm not sure what he hurt) saving the ball after said jump ball.

The scrub for life beat AD for the loose ball. Bucks called a TO with 1.6 left.

The rest is history.

That loose ball was
The first time i've ever seen AD shy from contact, he usually loves it. But he just kinda pulled up short looking like he didn't want to get hit. MY guess is he didn't want to get whistled for a cheap foul.

My guess
was that his wrist is making him skittish. He looked out of sorts several times in the game.

just to vent while i'm already pissed off
Ivan Carter totally F-ed this story up.  Everyone else reported Gilbert was a gametime decision, Washington Post said he was not playing.  Irresponsible.

I usually love Ivan too.

by Aldo on Apr 2, 2008 10:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not Ivan's Fault
Reporters have to rely on their sources.  Ivan's source was Gilbert himself.  Gilbert will always be Gilbert.  I still think it was an April Fools joke.  Ivan got fooled twice yesterday.

April Fools??
That would be even more irresponsible.  ESPN picked up this story, citing the Washington Post.  A reporter should be able to see an April Fools joke for what it is.  But, that being said, I don't think this was one.  Ivan should know better than to rely on "Gilbert himself," without corroboration or even a direct quote. In his official reporting, Ivan never said Gilbert not playing was speculation, or his opinion, it was reported as fact.

by Aldo on Apr 2, 2008 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree with Aldo
In the sense that Ivan's story about Gilbert not playing should not have been printed.  It relied on only one source, and an unnamed one at that.

Not sure that's Ivan's fault or the Post editors, but either way, agree that it was wrong to report it as fact.

Injury Update?
Anybody have a link?  I can't find anything on DeShawn, AD, CB3, or AJ.  What's the word?

injury update
Comcast Sports Night: Deshawn has ankle injury - xrays negative. He says he will play Friday.

Jamison has a shoulder injury. He will be reevaluated.

gilbert being gilbert
Not only do they play a more upbeat game with Gil they also take more chances - like risky passes. There were a lot of strange bounces in the game.

NBA rule I hate
I absolutely hate the rule that says you can advance the ball past halfcourt just by calling a time out. Always have and always will. The Milwaukee player had the ball 75 away from the basket with his back to the basket and no one to pass to with 1.1 seconds on the clock. Yet after a timeout, they get to have the ball in the front court.
And why can't our homecourt clock guy start the clock on time? 1.1 seconds for a catch, a pass, and a shot?

by hotplate on Apr 2, 2008 10:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Eddie's substitutions
Aarrgh! One more rant. I'm a big Eddie defender but 2 decisions in the last 10 seconds were puzzling. Number 1, why have Gilbert in there at all for the last 1.1 seconds. Deshawn was hurt, but how about AD and Mason?
Secondly, when Caron was hurt and it looked like he wouldn't be able to stay in for the jump ball, Eddie signaled for Songaila to come into the game for Caron. Turns out that Caron stayed in, but am I crazy for thinking that Blatche would probably be a better choice to participate in a jump ball than Songaila?

by hotplate on Apr 2, 2008 10:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No way Gil should have been in there
I love Gil, but when I saw Gilbert in all I could think was he's not even a good defender with 2 good legs.

might have been good learning experience
if we lost the game due to non-defense from gilbert and the team, that could be exactly what the team needs.

however, those injuries are just devastating. it just seems like plain rotten bad luck to me and i'm tired of it. i'll continue to hold out hope that AJ will be ready to go for playoffs, but at this point it doesn't look so good.

also, i was the one who argued that last year the wiz for the most part consistently beat the bad teams and lost to the good teams... that does not appear to be the case at all this year.

i have no idea what to expect from this team for the rest of this season. no wonder EJ has migraines, it's hard enough being a fan!

by DarrellWalkerFan on Apr 3, 2008 2:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

also
sorry for double post but i wanted to reiterate what others have said, that i've never seen anything like that before and i've seen a lot of disheartening things watching the wiz. three guys going down on one possession, two of them end up writhing on the bench as milwaukee hits a desperation shot to win the game. wow. ouch. what a punch in the gut.
