Bill Simmons' Wizards Trade Idea/TRADE DEADLINE THREAD

[editor's note, by Pradamaster]Since Wooz got the ball rolling, consider this your official trade deadline thread.

I'm about 99.9 percent sure the Wizards aren't doing anything today, seeing as how they have no assets to trade and their own GM says nothing is happening, so it's probably going to be a quiet day on the homefront.  So consider this a thread for other team's moves, as well as a space for you to comment on the Shaq, Gasol, and Kidd trades that have already occurred.

San Antonio's already acquired Kurt Thomas, and it appears the Hornets are about to acquire Bonzi Wells and Mike James from the Rockets.

This page will keep updating as the action continues. -PM

UPDATE 1: The big one so far is Ben Wallace, Wally Sczerbiak, Joe Smith, and Delonte West headed to Cleveland in a three way deal. I mention the Cleveland's side since their side has the most relevance to us since we play them tomorrow. In other news Gerald Green is headed to Houston and Juan Dixon is off to Detroit.

TRADE 6B: The Clippers trade Sam Cassell, Corey Maggette, Aaron Williams, their 2008 No. 1 (unprotected) and the rights to Minnesota's No. 1 in 2008 or 2009 to Washington for Gilbert Arenas, Etan Thomas and Washington's 2008 No. 1 (lottery-protected).

Why Washington does it: For four completely logical reasons. First, the Wizards don't have to spend max money on Gilbert when it's unclear if he's a franchise guy for anything other than a fantasy team. Second, when you factor in Gilbert's new contract with the $13 million they'd save by dumping Etan Thomas, they'd save something like $44 million in 2009 and 2010 combined because Cassell, Williams and Maggette are all expiring deals. (Heading into this summer after this deal, when you include Antwan Jamison's impending free agency, the Wizards would have a paltry $38 million committed to their 2008-09 payroll. ... That's right, more than enough money to sign a name free agent to replace Gilbert.) Third, those are two fantastic No. 1s they're getting back -- a lottery pick in 2008 and a probable high lottery pick from Minnesota -- and they have an All-Star to replace Arenas on and off the court (Caron Butler). And fourth, as crazy as this sounds, they'd actually improve their playoff chances this season by getting Cassell and Maggette since it's doubtful that Arenas comes back, anyway.

I guess it all depends on what you think of Gilbert. My buddy House (a Wiz fan) argues that Gilbert is far too popular in D.C. to ever get traded, but he uttered a terse "no comment" for my question, "Yeah, that's fine and all, but would you have fun playing with him?"

Why the Clips do it: Because of the improbable resurgence of Kobe and the Lakers, the poor Clips have been blown off the map locally. They're an afterthought. They don't matter. In other words, it's just like every other season. If they don't swing for the fences with the Cassell/Maggette contracts and their picks and try to acquire a star player, they will continue not to matter. (Put it this way: As a season-ticket holder, I'm not coming back next year unless they make a big move. I can't stomach another lousy season. And I'm not alone.) This trade gives them a foundation of Arenas, Elton Brand, Chris Kaman, Al Thornton and Shaun Livingston that's legitimately exciting on paper (at least until you remember that three of those guys suffered season-ending injuries), as well as an exciting franchise guy (and a local product) who would generate a ton of interest in Los Angeles on and off the court. Let's face it -- Gilbert was born to play in Hollywood. Literally. It's the perfect place for him.

I don't know about you guys
But I'm thinking a starting 5 of Cassell, Stevenson, Maggette, Odom, and Haywood = Championship.

You Forgot Someone
Where does Kwame Brown fit in this line-up?  Would he be the 6th Man?

Boom Goes the Dynamite
If everybody involved in this trade plays tomorrow night, we'll wish we're only beaten as bad as the last time we played Cleveland.

What the hell?
Strange trade.  Really don't like it for Cleveland...Wallace is washed up, Wally isn't very good, and Smith is an older version of Gooden.  Plus, where do they play everyone?  Where do you play Wallace?  Cleveland needed offense, and instead, they did this.  LeBron will be momentarily quenched, but this is not a good trade.

Chicago makes out okay...Gooden's better than Smith, and it helps to do anything to get rid of Wallace.  But Larry Hughes?  What are they going to do with him?

Two desperate GMs making a desperation trade that won't make much of a difference.  The NBA...it's Faaaan-tastic.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Yeah
It's like the three GM's of them got together, threw everyone they wanted to get rid of into a pile, shuffled them around and then added players in to even out salaries.

Really, really weird trade.

Wally Kills Us
If Wally plays tomorrow night, expect him to go for 40 against us.

That's very true
Daniel Gibson might do the same considering how well he shoots the deep ball.

Even So, ...
...the way the Wizards are playing lately, they'll still probably lose this one by about 10 points.  Especially if they come out with the same effort that they did against the Knicks.

It will be interesting
Wow, turning over half your team with one mid-season deal is a big move. Hopefully the 'zards can take advantage of the timing tonight. Long term, I'm curious about how they intend to use Wallace and Z. Together or rationing minutes between the 2 of them (making both unhappy)? I've always like Wally since I was in attendance at the Superdome when he scored 43 of his team's 58 points in a first round NCAA tournament upset of Washington. I think his shooting ability will help the Cavs. And I think Delonte West is an improvement over Hughes. But I've got my doubts about Wallace fitting in. With Gooden and Donyell gone, who's playing the 4? Plus there's bound to be a couple weeks of chemistry issues.

Oops, forgot
In the above post, I forgot that the Cavs got Joe Smith in the deal to play 4. Gooden's better though.

They just mentioned on ESPN -
that the Cavs are so short-handed for tonights game that they may have to sign some d'leaguers to play tonight.

Can't even wait for the game thread
What's Cleveland's starting lineup for the night? Lebron, Damon Jones, Ilgaskus, Varejo, and Devin Brown with Billy Thomas, Dwayne Jones and some other schlep coming off the bench?

I'm certain I'm reading too much into this, but I think Danny Ferry slapped us in the face. We're only 4.5 games down from the Cavs. This should be a big game. But here's my version of Ferry's thought process: "I can trade away half my team now because our next 3 games are against the Wiz, Grizz, and Bucks. I'm fairly certain Lebron could beat them if I gave him a bunch of 6th graders to play with."

Sad thing is he may be right. Brace yourselves boys: Bron-Bron's going for 80 tonight.

Hmmm
Michael Jordan made a pretty good career out of taking non-slights like this personally.

I'd love to see the Wiz come out with that kind of intensity. Unfortunately, the only games I can think of like this were the loss in Denver last season, right after Melo and several other Nuggets got suspended for fighting, and a game in which Toronto started two D-Leaguers two seasons ago. We lost both those games.

"Now, obviously individual production does not unilaterally equal better team production, but there's a high level of causation."

yeah
i wouldn't be shocked if lebron has a triple double with 40+ points tonight (assuming he has teammates to pass to).

with caron out, who guards lebron? antawn? blatche? could get ugly.

funny thing is, i don't necessarily think that translates into a cavs win. wouldn't be shocked if lebron goes huge and wiz stay in the game.
