Jaravis Crittenton
According to the Memphis Edge:
The Grizzlies are talking to the Wizards about a trade that would send Javaris Crittenton to Washington and allow Memphis to reclaim the first-round pick it dealt for the rights to Spaniard Juan Carlos Navarro in 2007.
That’s the deal. Nothing else to it from the Grizzlies’ end. The deal has not been completed. A league source said the trade likely will die if it isn’t finalized within the next couple of hours.
Personally, I'd like to see it happen. Wizards are desperate for a decent playmaker at point and Crittenton has some upside. How do you guys feel about this?

I was just thinking about Crittenton the other day
He’s buried down the bench with Kyle Lowry and Mike Conley in front of him at the point, not to mention OJ Mayo. We desperately need a young PG to develop, and I see some potential in him. I’m definitely vouching for this move if it goes down.

I don't believe the Wiz can send nothing back
as they don’t have a trade exception, per the ol’ trade machine.
3SoB is on this, btw.

Regarding the salary cap issue
from Ronald Tillery, who reported from the Mamphis Edge:
This deal is contingent on Washington taking care of some business first. That’s why it’s not done. It could die if Washington is unable to pull off another transaction.

"other business"
That other business must be trading one of the Wizards young guys to a team with a Trade Exception.
Jarvis Crittenton makes $1,381,560 (with 2 years remaining)
The only salaries that work are:
JaVale McGee $1,392,240
Nick Young $1,602,960
Oleksiy Pecherov $1,446,720
Ernie is not stupid – so I doubt he’d be trading McGee or Young… That leaves Pecherov as the only salary on the roster that works.
Since Memphis already has 3 centers (Darko Milicic, Marc Gasol, and Hamed Haddadi); I doubt they want Pecherov.
My guess is that Ernie is trying to work a deal with a team that has a Trade Exception, and is trying to trade Pecherov for the Exception. Then he’ll use the exception + the Draft Pick to acquire Crittenton.
Anyone know a team out there that is desperate for a 7ft Center who is a 3-point specialist that’s 30% from beyond the arc for his career?

Or
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Dixon and Brown both have unguaranteed contracts, so we could cut one or both of them to create enough room to make a move couldn’t we?

Correcting you
Both Dixon and Brown reportedly have “partially guaranteed” contracts…

Thanks
Unfortunately, a partially guaranteed contract doesn’t give us much of an idea of how partial it is, but it’s probably too much to make a difference.

Go for it
If we can do this and stay under the cap, I can’t imagine a reason not to. That pick we got from them is basically junk… might be of a little value in a mega-trade later this season or next season, but so might Crittenton. We could use another PG while Gil gets healthy/a timetable (wtf?!?!?!?), and I’d like to give Antonio enough rest to heal up a bit (love the guy for how hard he’s worked, but the wear and tear has taken its toll)

meh
never been a crittendon fan, but then again this is shaping up to be a pretty weak draft class, so outside the top 3-5 isnt very appealing. crittendon probably has more trade value than the pick, especially if he gets a chance to show his stuff here.

Probably a pretty good trade.
Wasn’t there completely ridiculous conditions on the Memphis pick anyway?
I’d be alright with this – especially if we end up trading AD this season or something.

Details
So, if we look at the potential trade opportunities… and what we know so far:
1. Memphis does NOT want another player back in trade. They just want a 1st round draft pick for Crittenten.
2. The Wizards don’t have a Traded Player Exception (TPE) to use for the trade.
Conclusion: A 3rd team needs to be involved.
Let’s take a look at the simplest scenario-
The Wizards trade a player (assume it’s Pech, since he’s the most logical) – to a team with a Traded Player Exception AND fewer than 15 players on their current roster.
Then the Wizards would have a Traded Player Exception they could use to trade for Crittenton; along with the 1st round pick.
So – which teams have a TPE and fewer than 15 players on their roster?
Chicago TPE=$5,205,000 (14 players)
Denver TPE=$13,078,903 (14 players)
Detroit TPE=$1,649,717 (13 players)
Houston TPE=$5,250,668 (14 players)
Orlando TPE=$3,300,000 (14 players)
Sacto TPE=$1,627,872 (14 players)
Which of those teams could use some support at the Center and PF posision?
Chicago has Tyrus Thomas, Aaron Gray, Joakim Noah and Michael Ruffin – but they need Offense – and none of those players really bring any. This is a possibility.
Denver has Nene Hilario, Chris Andersen, Cheikh Samb… but Samb has not been playing much. George Karl likes big guys that can shoot. Another possibility..
Detroit has Kwame Brown, Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiel and Rasheed Wallace. Perhaps Coach Curry has finally realized what a bust Kwame is… Another possibility.
Houston, Orlando and Sacramento all have TPE’s and fewer than 15 roster slots filled, but are loaded with Centers and PF’s
Personally, I think the best fit for Pecherov would be Chicago or Denver.
There are obviously more complex scenarios, involving other players, other teams, etc…. But I just wanted to look at the simple one…
What do you think?

I don't think Denver would be interested
Denver’s been trying to shed salary for the most part lately so I don’t think they’d be interested in adding on another salary, but maybe their surge to the top of the West has them re-thinking things.
Also, Ivan’s got a write-up about the trade explorations.
