Our Record in Perspective
[Note by cuppettcj, 12/15/08 21:59 PM EST] Updated this posting to reflect current reality.
Here is some perspective - the Wizards stink. They really, really stink. They are as bad as their 4-18 record would indicate. They just let a hapless Indiana Pacers squad come into their home arena and humiliate them by 20 points. For the record, that is two straight blowout losses to losing teams. That makes the Wizards even bigger losers. Now excuse me while I hide my face in shame.

Oh, and then there is this question posed on Yahoo!:
Why do some fans wear paper bags over their head at sporting events? I usually see this in highlights of teams that aren't doing very well, their fans wear paper bags over their heads, such as Washington Wizards fans, but why?

thats easy. they're embarrassed to be their fans but yet they are still loyal.

Thanks. Nice chart
Reminds me of my old TRS-80.
I love the optimism.
Losses to the Bucks and a depleted NYK sting extra bad, and I’m not sure NJ is a >.500 team whatever their record says.
But you make an excellent point. Besides, I’m going to keep watching the games, might as well have some hope while I do.

How Much RAM?
Reminds me of my old TRS-80.
My brother had one of the original TRS-80’s with only 4K of RAM. He later upgraded to the 32K so it wouldn’t lock up on big color basic programs. Did you have the cassette recorder to go along with it?
BTW, if I knew of a better way to post tables, I would. I suppose I could screenshot them, but I prefer to post something that can be copied, pasted, and manipulated.

Cannot recall the configuration
but I remember having the cassette drive thingy. And floppy discs. I mean FLOPPY floppy discs.
Perhaps we should redirect this to “TRS-80 forever”.
ps don’t get me started on the Apple IIc, Lisa, Mac Plus etc that have passed my way…

I had..........
My prize possession was a TRS-80 Model 4P portable…. 7 inch green screen (no graphics)… two floppy disks. Thing was the size of a small suitcase and weighed about 40 pounds. Got it at a yard sale…. I found a Radio Shack that still had a shrink wrapped TRS-DOS 6.0 for $2.00
I had a whole collection of working vintage computers – probably 25 or so:
Commodore =C64, Commodore VIC 20, Commodore 128, TRS-80 Model 1, TRS-80 Model III, Atari 800, TI 99/4A, the Original IBM PC, an early Apple II, and a real nice Apple II GS that I upgraded with an internal 4MB Hard Drive.
That Apple IIgs had as cool an operating system (GS/OS System 6.0.1) as Microsoft Windows, and in certain ways was faster and easier to use since most of the kernel was in ROM.
Then I had to close down my computer store, and the wife wouldn’t let me bring all that “old junk” home…

Wow
I didn’t realize the Wizards have only played four teams with a .500 record or worse. Some of the games against better opponents were definitely winnable, but it’s interesting to think about.

Ugh
Last night’s loss hurts. We are now two games off the pace for a 39 win season. If we’re going to continue to lose to the good teams, we have to offset that by beating the bad teams. Otherwise, we’re just plain bad. I wish they saved some of their energy from the Trail Blazers and Lakers’ games to actually win one against a sub-par Bulls squad.
It is especially disappointing that they picked the season before one of the worst draft classes since 2000 to play a terrible season. Typical luck for this franchise.

Partially agree
worst draft classes
I’ll agree that overall, the upcoming 2009 Draft is weak… but the first 2 picks should be Blake Griffin and Ricky Rubio (in any order you choose)…. Either of those two guys would be a good pick for the Wizards.
Blake Griffin is a big time force inside. He’s a tenacious and powerful rebounder. He’s big (6’10", 260 lbs), tough and strong. Good post moves and finishes strong even with contact. The Wizards lack a big, strong interior force. All of their bigs are finesse type guys, so Griffin could fill a void.
Ricky Rubio is big for a PG (6’4", 180) with long arms and a frame that should allow him to put on some additional weight without losing any quickness. Rubio is an absolutely amazing passer, making seemingly impossible plays. A good (not great) perimeter defender. I’ve seen him play, and he reminds me of a cross between Pistol Pete Maravich and Steve Nash (yeah – I said it… this kid is that good). Rubio could be the backup PG the Wizards need, at least until Gilbert moves to the SG. Rubio and Arenas in the same back court would be impossible for opponents to stop.
Stephen Curry is getting a lot of press – but do the Wizards need another shoot-first scoring PG?
After that, there are a few of the “tremendous upside”, runs like a deer, jumps outta the gym big guys:
- – - Hasheem Thabeet, the 7’3" Connecticut center may impact, especially on the defensive end.
- – - B. J. Mullens, the 7’1" center from Ohio State is another super-athletic big man..
Past that, it’s a real crap shoot.
So the Wizards better hope for a lot of ping pong balls – and eventually a top 2 pick.

Also
Lots of people were saying this year’s draft class was bad. Yet tons of people are standing out.

Last Year's draft
2008 saw a lot of good big men drafted – including JaVale McGee – but also Marc Gasol, Brook Lopez, Robin Lopez, Kosta Koufos, Michael Beasley, and Marreese Speights all having an impact on their teams.
Perhaps the 2009 Draft will be known for the Point Guards, with guys like Rubio, Jrue Holiday, Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, Ty Lawson, Stephen Curry and Darren Collison.

That's All Fine and Good
But I have just two points.
Usually when everybody is saying that such and such draft class is going to be really lousy, it’s because that draft class will be really lousy. Just because the last draft produced better than expected players doesn’t mean that this upcoming one will. The Wizards sort of have to hope that lightning strikes twice in the same place, so to speak.
If it’s a good draft for guards, it still won’t help us that much. Sure, a backup guard won’t hurt, but how is a backup guard going to help us defend the paint? IMO, that is our biggest weakness. Until we can man up on guys in the low post without having to always bring the double-team, we will continue to give up both a ton of second-chance points and a ton of wide open 3 pointers. Nobody here believes me when I say this, but it seems other analysts are seeing this too. During the Orlando game on TNT, Kenny Smith broke down a bunch of plays at halftime. He basically said during one of the plays (I can’t remember his exact words), “the Wizards don’t have anybody big, so they always have to bring the double-team.” Wouldn’t it be nice if this wasn’t so true? This is why the Wizards are so terrible without Brendan. He’s the only guy they have who can hold his ground phsically with another player in the paint one-on-one. Without him, the Wizards ought to just change their names to the Rag Dolls, because that’s what they look like.

Guards
The rookie guards aren’t doing shabby either: Rudy F, OJ mayo, Rose, George Hill, D.J. Augustin, Russell Westbrook, Mario Chalmers are all logging major minutes. While it’s not the most flashy drafts like in 2003 where franchise players were everywhere; 2008 draft class has a lot of good role players who I expect will stay in the league for a long time.

Thanks for listing the Guards ...
so I didn’t have to. And don’t forget Batum starting at SF for Portland. This draft looks very solid at every position – not sure how many will end up being true stars, but lots of NBA-ready talent.
Getting buckets since 2003.

Sweet!
We stumbled against Chicago, but made up for it by beating Detroit. We are still only one game off the pace for a 39 win season, and we have proven once again that we can beat good teams even without Gilbert and Brendan. Every day we can stay afloat without those guys brings us closer to getting them back. We can still salvage this season! I’m not giving up hope yet!

As long as
We play the good teams while they are undergoing experimental roster changes. I don’t know what Michael Curry was thinking last night. Lets hope we heat up when Gil comes back!

Winning Streak Starts Tonight!
The Wizards are scheduled to play Philadelphia twice and Indiana once in the next 4 games. If they can get some momentum by beating Philly tonight, and use that to upset a struggling Detroit team on Monday, the Wizards might be looking at not just their first winning streak of the season, but their first 4 game winning streak of the season. Imagine 8-16. Sounds a lot better than 4-16.

OK, No More Predictions
A losing mentality has obviously infected this team. I still think this team still has a small chance to make the playoffs this season, but they somehow must find a way to get their confidence back. Unfortunately, they may have already passed through the point of no return.
