This not the first time the Wizards were close to a trade. Sources tell me that the team was on the verge of a deal that would have sent Daniels, Etan Thomas and another player (maybe Dee Brown) to Chicago in October for Larry Hughes but the deal was put off when Hughes (shocker) injured his shoulder.
Whoa! If you remember, this isn't the first time that the Wizards have been rumored to be shopping for Hughes.
For what it's worth, this deal works. I get the feeling Chicago would balk at that trade (or maybe we would, I'm terrible with trade ideas) but I get the feeling that this isn't the last time that we'll see Larry Hughes involved in a trade rumor with the Wizards.

I Wouldn't Throw a Temper Tantrum if That Happens
but I get the feeling that this isn’t the last time that we’ll see Larry Hughes involved in a trade rumor with the Wizards.
I know that most here are really down on Larry, but I still think he’s great in the right system. Call him a system guard, if you will. It just so happens that it is our system he excels in.

For some reason...
I do recall hearing Hughes returning to Wiz rumors back then…..but I have a hard time separating dreams from the internet (not that getting Larry-Lar back would be a “dream” in the good sense of the word).

I wonder if our system has changed
under Tapscott enough that it no longer works for hughes as well.
but he and gil would be happy, he’s a decent defender at the 2 – i was very much against the notion of him coming back at first, but now am a little intrigued.
Who w/ Etan could make this happen?

Well
I wonder if our system has changed

I imagine that under ET we will still utilize some form of the Princeton, as we are right now. And Larry has great chemistry with Gil. I know that Gil would be ecstatic to have his back court partner back. Those guys used to set each other up so well it was like they could read each other’s thoughts or something.

A couple things
First and foremost, I’m thrilled to hear that Brendan’s cast is coming off on Dec. 22. Now THAT is exciting news.
Second, thank goodness we didn’t pull the trigger on Larry back in October. I don’t dislike him, I just don’t think he improves our roster as well as Crittenton possibly could.
Third, I know this contradicts what I just stated, but if we have a chance to deal Mike James and Etan Thomas for Larry, I’d be all for it. Hell, maybe we could throw Deshawn in there since we no longer have Dee Brown. I was against getting Larry at first, but then I noticed his contract ends after 09/10 just like Etan and Mike James’. He’d be a huge upgrade over Deshawn.

I'd definitely prefer Larry to DeShawn
That’s for sure. He expires sooner and will at least fit in a little better.
The problem is that Hughes isn’t worth giving up anyone outside the DeShawn/Etan/James pu pu platter. Maybe Pecherov can be a sweetner. Before his recent stretch, I would have considered throwing Darius in there, but I don’t think I can anymore. And why would Chicago want to commit more money long-term with DeShawn.

What About Etan/James/Dixon?
Less years to commit to for Chicago. You likee?

It's the same amount of years
Etan and James both expire in 10. They save 800,000 with Dixon.
I mean, I’d do that, but would they? I don’t see why they would.

I Thought You Said
That DeShawn’s contract is longer?
And why would Chicago want to commit more money long-term with DeShawn.
Wouldn’t Dixon be a better deal for them than DeShawn, in that case?

Oh, I misunderstood you
I meant that Etan and MJ expire at the same time as Hughes, so what’s the point for the Bulls?

Well
The Bulls, according to Ivan, would have been satisfied with AD, Etan, and Dee Brown. So it doesn’t look like their demands are very high for Larry. I’m sure we could come up with a sweetener that would satisfy them, especially since it seems that all they are looking for is a bunch of expiring contracts they can split apart in trades next season.

Maybe the Bulls' kicker in that trade was AD
Maybe his value was higher than we thought. He did have a good year last year and provides great veteran leadership, something that Derrick Rose could use.

Yeah, But
Chicago is rebuilding and AD wasn’t going to help them much this season or next. More likely, they just wanted his contract to deal in a trade next season.

exactly - and that is why
as lopsided as some of these ideas sound for the wiz, the bulls might do something like this.
darius should not be part of it.

Maybe AD and Etan would have been...
Easier for Chicago to move separately over Hughes’ one contract.

Yea
That does sound like a poo poo platter for sure. Thats why I don’t understand why Chicago would do this trade. Same amount of years for them all. Now if it added depth (?) or veteran leadership (?) or scoring punch (?) or something it seemed like Chicago needed it would seem right but it just doesn’t make much sense to me.
I’d say any combination of the three of Etan, James, Dixon, or Pech, would definitely be worth giving up. I’m not so sure about including Darius in there at this point either, I think we really need him once we get our whole squad back together.

I wouldn't include Darius because he could fetch a greater return
I’d think.

If Darius was the kicker in the trade
would you do it then?
Say James/Dixon/Darius for Hughes?
I think I’d do that one.
Dear Diary, JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!
by Evander holyfield on Dec 10, 2008 9:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Eh, I dunno
If they take Darius, I’d want them to take DeShawn as well.
I’d rather trade Darius for someone that expires this year for lux tax savings. Failing that, I’d try to get another decent young guy or a pick or someone who can help right away. Hughes doesn’t fit any of those bills.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

True
And I was thinking that Hughes’ expiring contract is worth as much as James and Etan’s two expiring contracts, but I realized that with two rather than one contract, it’s easier to split them up in multi team deals, which opens up our options/flexibility under EG.

Trade Versatility
Thats why I don’t understand why Chicago would do this trade. Same amount of years for them all.
Larry Hughes has one big contract that can be packaged in one deal. Etan, James, and player X would be two large contracts and one small one that they could use in multiple trades to gather more talent. If that was not their intent, then I don’t understand why AD, Etan, and Dee Brown would have been enough for them. Whatever the reason, if they want to deal with us, we shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

Yea
I noticed that aspect of the two contracts rather than one shortly after I mentioned it. That does make sense, although if I were the Bulls I would have liked to get AD in a trade with us.

With a bench of
1 Nick Young
2 JaVale McGee
3 Andray Blatche
4 Darius Songaila
5 Javaris Crittenton
6 Juan Dixon
(In our fantasy championship dream, we’d get Larry for Deshawn, Pesh, and Etan. ehh throw in a 2nd rounder too)

Depth chart would be:
PG: Arenas, Crittenton, James
SG: Hughes, Young, Dixon
SF: Butler, McGuire
PF: Jamison, Blatche, Songaila
C: Haywood, McGee
Now thats an athletic and versitile lineup. Any combination of those players (- James) would run all over the opposition. Sign me up!

well, as mentioned above
if it’s Stevenson it’s likely not happening because of the year of money in 2010-11. I don’t think the Bulls are that gung-ho for 2010, but I can’t see them dealing for more 2010 salary without sending out Nocioni or Hinrich.
If it was all 2010-or-before money, I’d take just about any combination, even if those players can’t really play. If you haven’t noticed, the Bulls are a bit guard heavy and I think Larry is only biding time before he throws a fit about sitting behind Gordon and Rose. When Hinrich comes back it’ll become a real problem.
He’s actually playing well this season, shooting some ungodly (or at least un-hughes-ly) percentage on 3-pointers. So maybe they can get a better deal than Thomas+whoever.

and what is really interesting about this
is that until now, the only chatter about Hughes-to-Wiz was coming from Sam Smith. repeatedly.

Hughes Redux?
There is no question that Larry Hughes and the Wizards enjoyed great success together… it would be great to get him back. And since we will also have Nick Young, Javaris Crittenden and Juan Dixon in reserve when his inevitable inuries occur, the insurance is also there.
The question is what will the Bulls take now to make the deal happen. I believe it will take more than a “pu-pu platter” of expiring contracts (Mike James and Etan Thomas) to make this deal go down. Adding an Andray Blatche for Ty Thomas switch might be necessary. As well as Blatche has begun to play, the change of scenery may make Ty Thomas at least if not more valuable.
Having just watched Phoenix hi-jack Jason Richardson from Charlotte, I am beginning to believe that more and more high visibility players are going to be changing uniforms netween now and the deadline.
No reason the Wizards should not get in on this if it makes medium to long term sense for the team (tho I do believe that in the absense of any further deals, Mike James makes eminent short-term sense).
