Why the Wizards Need Stephon Marbury - Stet Sports Blog
I know not everyone is going to agree with this, but since it appears that Marbury's buyout is imminent, it's at least worth discussing, right?

How's This for a Discussion?

I've thought about this.
Was too scared to post my thoughts, haha. First of all, I do not like Stephon Marbury at all. The idea that he can be a starting point guard in this league AND lead a team to a championship is proven to be false. He has been a cancer and a loser pretty much everywhere he has been.
That being said, I would love to get Stephon Marbury on this team. Do you think I give a shit about the distractions he brings? NO. Do we have a good thing going that we need to worry about messing up? NO.
Let’s face the music here folks – WE SUCK THIS YEAR. It’s not because we don’t have the talent to win, it’s because the guys on that team are exhausted from “holding down the fort”. This team isn’t going anywhere without Gilbert Arenas and they know it…and sadly they play like it too.
I am sick of seeing Juan Dixon, Dee Brown, and Antonio Daniels run the point. Dixon and Brown are barely in the league….Daniels’ is looking AWFUL. Say what you want, yeah Marbury is a douche bag – but that fool can produce from the point guard spot. We need that in the worst way. If not from the production standpoint, then from a developmental standpoint. IMO, young players develop quicker with a good pg, especially wing players.
Really people, what do we have to lose here? This team is obviously not going to give 100% without Arenas, and they will not learn defense until a new coaching regime is put in place. We are looking pretty solid for a top 5 pick anyways. Get Marbury on the cheap. What’s the worst that could happen?
I bet you if a vengeful Marbury was running the Wizards the other night, a 7 man Knicks squad wouldn’t have beat us.

Is the Goal to Simply Beat a Depleted Knicks Squad?
I agree that we suck. So where do we go from here? How does Starbury lead us to the promised land? We wouldn’t be getting him “on the cheap” either, we would be acquiring his $22 million salary. To make the trade work, we would have to give up a ton. And what would we get in return? Cap space. That’s it. I just don’t see how it’s worth it. Starbury is not part of any team’s future, IMO.

Unless
The Wizards were to sign him to a minimum contract after the Knicks buy out his contract, which could happen as soon as today. We’d have to release either Dixon or Brown to sign him, but I don’t think anyone is going to lament releasing either of those guys all that much.
The way I see it, even if he becomes as big of a cancer in Washington as he was in New York, it’s not like he’d hurt the on-court product all that much since we’re already pretty bad and he’d be easy to release. I get the feeling that Washington won’t pursue it, but I’m pretty sure there will be teams looking to sign him once he becomes available.

OK, I Get it Now
I suppose a cheap contract thrown his way couldn’t hurt. It might be worth seeing if he’s got anything valuable left to offer.

Except
Release Dixon and/or Brown…
Sign Starbury to a Vet Minimum contract (for him, a 12-year vet, over $1.4 Million) -
That will put the Wizards over the Luxury Tax limit.
It’s not gonna happen…..

Ahh
I forgot that the minimum contract goes up the longer you stay in the league. I knew I was missing something.
Oh well, it’s still an interesting thought at least.

I'd be open to the idea
If Marbury gets the old Bullets logo tattooed to the side of his dome.

Negatory
Starbury isn’t going to help our young guys develop, because he’s going to be a dick in the locker room. I’d rather have them looking up to AD-out-of-gas than Steph. We aren’t going to win much more with him, either… Maybe we’ll get the 10th lottery pick instead of the 4th, woohoo!
Bring in guys with good character, give the youngs time to develop, and aim for next year. Locker room dysfunction matters, even on a losing team.

I just lost
a long-ish post (browser troubles), so I’ll just summarize my points:
- Stet’s argument for Marbury in DC boils down to little more than “wouldn’t it be fun?”
- Marbury would take PT away from Nick Young, and I would argue that at this point in their careers, Marbury is not demonstrably better or more deserving of time than NY. He might take time away from Stevenson, but there are other players the Wizards already have who should be doing that.
- Marbury is a bad fit for the offense. I would argue that he’d duplicate what players like Stevenson, Daniels and Dixon have brought, which hasn’t really worked out this season. Plus, he tends to dominate the ball, which Arenas (when he comes back) also does. Marbury will also add nothing defensively.
- I don’t want Marbury within 5 feet of Young and Blatche. If there are questions about Blatche and Young’s maturity, and there are, the best thing they can do about it is watch guys like Jamison come in every day and play their asses off. Not watch whatever it is Marbury will decide to do. The Wizards have veterans who can try and keep Marbury in check, but I have a feeling that might backfire and isolate them (in his mind anyway). When/if that happens, he’ll either continue to get PT, which will send the wrong signal to the three young players, or he’ll sit again, which will mean the Wizards will pay two guys to not play for them (Marbury and whomever they cut to get him).
I vote no on Prop Marbury.

I rather
watch a bad rebuilding team than a mediocre team with bad chemistry and terrible teamwork with players pouting at each other. Marbury will try to impose himself as the alpha male and would encroach on Arenas territory which would lead to another Etan/Brandon brawl but at the point guard position. He’s been on alot of decent teams, and all of them improved when he left. I don’t want him being the mentor to the younger guys, I don’t want him on the Wizards. I don’t want him in the NBA.

Waitwait, that's IT!
We HAVE to sign Marbury. Play him for two games (preferably against good teams that were going to beat us anyway). Then we cut him.
Don’t you see??? The Marbury bounce! It’s brilliant. We can’t play any worse with him, and all teams do way better once he’s cut. So bring the dude in, cut him, and reverse the curse of Les Boulez! That’s worth $1.4 million plus the luxury tax if it’s worth a dime.

Let me get this straight...
We’ve all observed a lack of offensive chemistry and defensive intensity on this squad, and the solution is to get Marbury?
Maybe five, six years ago. But not this season. Not with this squad. We might as well dust off Sprewell.
More defensive players, less offensive ones, please…

Marbury goes to Texas
Either Houston or Dallas.
Neither he nor the Wiz have any reason to get together.

Starbury can kiss
my entire….you know the rest. Anyone that has been in a locker room or barracks know why you don’t want a guy like that on this young team. He is best served to go to a team like the Spurs who have enough vets to tell him to shut the h3ll up and play or sit and shut up. Do NOT bring him near McGee and I can just see him and Bulletproof going out on the town every night…pleassssseeeee drop this thought.

Of course Stephon is Whacked but can he play?
I would take a pissed off Starbury with something to prove over the subpar backcourt options the Wizards have right now. I wonder how much he has left on the court and much of his “distractions” are just inflated by the NYC/ESPN tabloid media.
Cheap Abe would never want to go over the salary cap so I doubt this would ever happen anyway.
What? They don't have TV in the D-League? Don't watch me, watch TV.

What benefit does he bring the Wizards
I don’t think he has anything left but if he did of what benefit does it bring the Wizards? Is he going to lead this team to the playoffs…no. Is he going to fit in with Jamison and Butler as leaders of this team…no. Is he going to make a positive impact on the young players on this team….h3ll no. Wizards want to improve the backcourt, start Nick Young

Depends on how long Gilbert Arenas is out.
I’d be willing to take a chance on Marbury if Gil was out until the All-Star break
