Oh boy
According to the post game show, Ernie Grunfeld addressed the team after the game tonight.
And here…we…go.

Maybe this is a good thing
Maybe Grunfeld is saying that the players are now playing for their career with the Wizards and that they’ll be on the chopping block if they don’t improve. Maybe he was even saying the same thing to the coaches. Either way, something is needed. I know we don’t have Arenas or Haywood but it’s seriously getting ridiculous. We have too much talent to be this bad.

On defense, we can’t defend my grandmother if she was standing outside the 3-point line.
On offense, we can’t defend the 3-point shots, when we get high percentage shot attempts in the paint.

You think I’m a little preoccupied with one thought after this last game?

Just a little
Why does Darius Songaila have a black eye? We can’t defend the 3-point shots.

This is the Real Story about Songaila's black eye...
I heard Songaila was trying to defend a 3-pointer from Pech during practice, and Pech was just drilling them in his eye. So to motivate him, Pech drilled one in his eye.
Its time
to rebuild, and make some trade and starting over. Trade jamison to Lafrentz work b/c of salary. I dont care what we gettin, its time to clear the cap for 2010-11
Zzzz
Can we not trade the entire team after every loss?
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Mike Bibby can't drive
And yet all we do is give him open threes!
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Wait
I didn mean to trade entire team, Im keeping Arenas (b/c of his huge salary, no one want him), McGee, and Young. All other plyers r on tradin block
To be honest
I don’t want to trade anybody until I see how Arenas is looking.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
i agree
hope gil be back soon. but no im not even keepin butler cause he seems to be the only plyer that has great asset at this point..i dont know, i guess if we continue to loose like this, then its not coach problem anymore, its plyers. and if we get a high draft pick, maybe we should trade them for low post plyer since this draft doesnt have many franchise players like this past couple of years but yeah, i agree we ll see how arenas is lookin
OK, I'll Admit It
I gave Eddie Tapscott way too much credit for the defensive improvements against Golden State. It’s very clear that the Wizards are still the same bad defensive team that they were before, especially with regard to 3-point defense. I still think that better coaching can help this team to improve, but probably not enough for them to get to the next level. (I’m talking about the next level from the last four seasons; the next level from this terrible start would be to actually win 30 games).
I’ve had it with this red carpet defense. Trade anybody, I don’t care. As far as I’m concerned, no player should be off the table. Antawn will never be a competent defender, Caron has turned into Stephon Marbury all of a sudden, and Gilbert is eternally injured (will he ever play healthy again?). If any other team wants these clowns, let them have ‘em. They’ll probably be alright as long as they’re not the primary option on another team, or are expected to play good defense. This team will have a new coach and a lottery pick next season, which is a great opportunity to rebuild. I think we’ve finally closed the door on the current makeup of this team. 2004-05 was the best it was ever going to get. Blame Karma for all the injuries, if you will. But it’s time to break this team up. There’s a chance I’ll regret writing this, but oh well.
I feel like beating my head against a wall. After four promising seasons, the Wizards are back to square one.

Caron is Stephon Marbury?
Yeah, you’re regretting this already.
Old habits don’t just go away. It takes time.

I Appreciate Your Calm Demeanor
God knows, I could use it. But I just really thought this team would have pulled its act together by now. Atlanta is an average team, and Caron just played terrible tonight. The Stephon Marbury comparison was a stretch, but consider these numbers: 8-22 from the field (including several missed layups), 4-7 from the free throw line (remember when Caron used to be automatic from the charity stripe? No more), and 4 turnovers (some just plain sloppy). Your comment about him becoming a shot-jack is dead on. His usage rate this season is 26.3, well above his average for his career. His TS% is surprisingly good overall, but I’ve noticed a lot of sloppiness from him when handling the ball and a lot of poor focus from the free throw line this season. He can’t go one-on-one with the whole other team the whole game and expect to win a lot of games for the Wizards. He has to find ways to get his other teammates involved. And he has to stop breaking the offense so often when he touches the ball.
But yeah, I do regret the Marbury comparison. I’m just very frustrated right now.

I think he's being asked to do too much
On the whole, he’s been quite efficient, and the slopiness aside, his turnover rate isn’t any higher than before.
Offensively, I can’t find too many faults with Caron. I have been disappointed with his defense, but again, he’s doing so much offensively that he has no energy.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
That Plus Playing Around 40 Minutes Per Game...
… probably doesn’t help his energy on defense either.

Antawn has been playing well
Of course not defensively but at this point in his career he will never play good defense. I am really pleased with his offensive production this season though. You can count him in for 20 and 10 every single night without many turnovers or silly, sloppy mistakes like Caron. Many people here thought he was going to start his decline this year but has not shown signs of that at all.
The thing is though, Jamison does not have the type of game where he has to dribble and create shots for himself and everyone else like Caron is being forced to do since Gilbert is out. All Jamison has to do is get the ball in his sweet spots and he will do the rest. The rebounding rate is just because of his great hustle and timing. Even with all of that said his offensive production in his 38-40 minutes every game is impressive despite his defensive deficiencies.
Now Im so lookin forward
to a game when Cav just completely destroy the Wiz and James completely humiliate Dsteve
DeShawn Doesn't Need LeBron to Humilate Him
He’s doing a good job of humiliating himself this season. He ought to be ordered to stop shooting until Gilbert comes back.

To boot list:
Deshawn, Etan, Dixon, Antawn’s contract, and maybe Daniels. I say they should blow up the team now and start a youth movement led with only Arenas, Butler and whoever we can get for Antawn as the vets.
Also, apart from from his crucial late TO, Songaila has been playing great, now if he could only rebound…
Etan and AD will go in 2010
Because they’re expiring. It’ll probably cost us one of Blatche/Young/McGee, but it’ll be worth it.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Expiring Contracts Costing Us a Player?
Please explain. Do you mean that we should package one of those players with AD and Etan in a trade? What do you envision?

Yeah
Do you mean that we should package one of those players with AD and Etan in a trade?
Kind of what I meant. I figure that it might take that to get a real impact guy.

The Defense
I addressed this in the game thread, but a few people brought this up here, which is why I didn’t respond to any one post specifically.
I don’t think the problem with the defense is the players. I think it’s the system.
Look, I know the Wizards don’t have any world-beaters on the defensive side, not even Stevenson. But what they’re being asked to do is killing any chance the team has of winning. The first step, as I see it, is that in the zone scheme, they play way off the ball, as many as three feet inside the three-point line. So already it takes them a couple of extra steps to challenge outside shots. Then, they’re basically required to double anyone who penetrates the lane, which brings the defender even closer to the basket. If a team is good at swinging the ball around and has good outside shooters (let’s use Orlando as exhibit A), the Wizards basically have no chance.
A few examples from tonight’s game, and pardon me if my memory isn’t quite exact. But there was one play in the second half where Butler’s man had the ball, then passed it to the corner. The other three Hawks were on the other side of the court, so Butler had to both double the guy with the ball, and not leave his man wide open. He compensated by kind of standing in between them, right at the foul line. Which is fine if there’s dribble penetration, but his original assignment was standing wiiiiiide open from the top of the three point line. He didn’t get the ball back, but if he did there’s no way Butler was in position to challenge the shot. One other note about this: because of all the doubling, a lot of times when the ball is swing around there are as many as 4 Wizards in/around the paint. If the shooter misses and it’s a long rebound, the opposing players are pretty much the only ones in position. I have a hunch the scheme is why so many teams have good offensive rebounding nights against us.
Later in the 4th, as the Wizards were closing the gap, it appeared Tapscott abandoned the zone scheme and went with a man defense. Stevenson in particular was able to get right up on the ball handler and make passing more difficult. True, a lot of times the ball made it’s way to the rim anyway, where Jamison is ill-equipped to guard Horford man-to-man, but to paraphrase what someone said in the game thread, I’ll take a contested shot in the paint over an open three any day.
I don’t know for a fact that the new defensive scheme is what’s been the problem, but I have a sneaking suspicion it’s a large part of it.
I Would Have Agreed 100%
But I honestly thought that this was the fault of Eddie Jordan/Randy Ayers. I don’t understand why ET won’t abandon this system if it wasn’t working. My only thought is that his players just can’t defend one-on-one. Either that, or he’s back to deferring to Randy Ayers after the Golden State game.

I'll argue for calmness
This season is going to suck. I’m in favor of the “youth movement” in terms of giving serious PT to Young, McGee, and Blatche, but wouldn’t favor blowing up the team for two reasons:
1. We’re getting Arenas back at some point. He’s both a superstar and an unpredictable character who we want to keep happy. No need to turn this squad into the Minnesota T-Wolves of two years ago while he’s sidelined.
2. AD and Etan will be great trading chips next season. Why trade off the whole team for parts this year (and still not make the playoffs) when we could instead keep the team we have, give the young guys some burn, and then next season have the big 3, more mature young guys, a high draft pick, and a shot at a monster trade that gives us that last essential ingredient? That’s way better than making trades now.
That said, yeah I’m pissed about Deshawn’s shot-jacking, and yeah I didn’t expect the team to be anywhere near this bad. But the team isn’t going to be good this year no matter what. Let the young guys grow, and set the stage for a hell of a year next year.
Are There Not Going to Be More Teams...
… trading for 2009-10 this season? Isn’t that what the Knicks did? If so, we might not have to wait until next season to unload AD and Etan. I’m hoping that’s the case. It would be one big thing to look forward to – a monster trade.

AD played pretty well
that was good to see. he could make a big difference in the short term.
don’t know what that post game talk was about. EG should know he can only crack the whip so much.
like sierra dave says, calmness would help.

Perhaps it Was Something Like
“Hey guys, see that wasn’t so hard! Great job! Just do that 68 more times and we’ll be set come lottery time!”
