Mobley: So, do you have any interest in being a head coach?
Ewing: Interest? Definitely. I don’t think any assistant coach in this league…[pauses] I think every assistant coach in this league aspires to be a head coach, unless they are older, and have already done it. Then, they just want to coach for the fun of it.

Mobley: That being said, assuming the Wizards job is open and available would you consider yourself a candidate?
Ewing: I love DC. I have a lot of history here. I played college ball here, worked here for a year, this [Washington] is where I started assistant coaching. But hey, anywhere I could get a job, I’d take it.

So how would you feel about Patrick Ewing as a future coach? He's certainly gotten the job done a fine job in Orlando as an assistant coach developing Dwight Howard into what he is today. Just think what he could do with JaVale McGee and Andray Blatche. For what it's worth, Brian Schmitz is on board with the idea.

The whole "Make Ewing a head coach" campaign confuses me

At least Mark Jackson is vocal. Patrick Ewing may have been the most withdrawn athlete of his era. Why exactly will he be able to communicate with our young guys?

And it’s funny to hear that he “developed” Dwight Howard and Yao Ming, as if they couldn’t develop on their own. (I’m not blaming you for this, Jake). And for some reason, every beat reporter everywhere wants to push the campaign. It makes no sense.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Yeah

I was going back and forth on whether or not to include that since it seems to me like Howard still relies mostly on his athleticism to dominate games and it’s not like Ewing made Dwight into athletic force that he is. But I gave him the benefit of the doubt since it seems like everyone says that he’s made a difference and generally when I’m in the minority on something I’m usually wrong.

As a head coach...

Not with us. I need, more importantly, the Wizards need an established head coach that will preach defense and get us to the promise land. I don’t want, nor should the Wizards, someone that has never been a head coach before and would be beginning his career with us. I want to know what I will be getting out of the next head based on past performance. If he wants to come on board to be an assistant and help McGee then I’m all for it, but he more than likely doesn’t want to do that so I say hell no like everybody else. NEXT OPTION!!

I Will Say This
I don’t want, nor should the Wizards, someone that has never been a head coach before and would be beginning his career with us.

I generally agree with this, but I might make an exception for Tom Thibideau.

I’m doubtful over Ewing’s head coaching credentials. There’s many more assistant coaches who are more deserving of stepping up.
