Open Thread: Regular season game 10 vs. Houston Rockets

Houston @ Washington

P1_sampson-getty_medium

Even in the best of times, Houston has owned us recently.  They swept us in each of the last three years, including a blowout win in Houston last year that may have been the low point of the season.  Without Brendan Haywood, this will be JaVale McGee's wake-up call to the NBA.  I'm curious to see how he passes it.

Everyone's going for the Rockets, including the Great Wall, Crazy Pills and McGimpy.  Ivan Carter's saying Antonio Daniels will play tonight, but Dee Brown will start.  If that's not an insult to AD, I don't know what is.  (For the record, I support it, but man, how do you think that makes him feel).

Check out new SB Nation site The Dream Shake for the opposing view.  They still think AD and Etan are starting, but otherwise, they're funny.  Read them.

And, oh joy, we're on ESPN.  I bet they wish they could take that matchup back.

Game's at 7.  Let's hope we don't lose by more than 20.

The good thing about being ESPN

If JaVale has a big highlight, it’ll get more play.

have we sunk so low

as to just hope that we get a top 10 play on sportscenter?

It was a nice start

If it was a Thursday, it might make it, but there’s too many games tonight for that to be Top 10.

At least 5 minutes too many for Dixon, who finished at -13 for the game.

What's with all the Dixon hate?

He was the only one who hit shots in the 4th. Nick Young was 1-5 in this game, Stevenson was 3-12, and Butler and Jamison combined for 12-32 shooting. He’s become a scapegoat, but fact is he shot better than the big scorers and I don’t get why he’s singled out.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 9:41 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He lost us the game

Sure he hit some big shots, or shots that seemed big at the time… but that was because he was the only one holding the ball… so he kind of HAD to shoot it once the shot clock got down to 3 seconds. He’s not a PG, and I think he showed that tonight.

Dear Diary, JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!

by Evander holyfield on Nov 21, 2008 9:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If he was

it’s only because he didn’t pass the ball to anyone.

by Jon L on Nov 21, 2008 9:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What are you talking about?

He had three assists, and I recall a pretty nice feed to Etan. Butler and Jamison had atrocious shooting percentages, someone had to score.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 9:45 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jamison and Butler dominated through the first 3 quarters

And suddenly they stop getting the ball in their sweet spots and our offense gets bogged down. I honestly hadn’t seen our offense run so well and with the precise passing that it needs until tonight. I don’t think Jamison had his best game of the season through 3 quarters as a result of Juan getting him the ball… and it looked like we had the lead in those quarters.

Dear Diary, JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!

by Evander holyfield on Nov 21, 2008 9:48 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Which is

3 more than Dee Brown had in similar minutes. Everyone seems enamored with him and dumps on Dixon, and it just doesn’t add up.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 9:49 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well

assists aside, Brown led the team with a +4 on the night, and Dixon tied for the worst (with Songaila) with a 13. So that’s part of it (caveats about single-game +/ aside).

by Jon L on Nov 21, 2008 9:51 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The difference between Dee Brown and Juan Dixon

Juan is supposed to be in at the point, where we need ball distribution. Though he might not get direct assists, Dee Brown moves the ball. Juan just didn’t move the ball enough tonight.

Dear Diary, JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!

by Evander holyfield on Nov 21, 2008 9:52 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dee Brown moves the ball

because he can’t score. He only has one option, and that’s to pass it.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 9:53 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly, he knows his role

Is Juan Dixon’s role the “gunner?” or was he in at the point?

Dear Diary, JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!

by Evander holyfield on Nov 21, 2008 9:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also

The last shots of the game were missed by Stevenson, Butler, Blatche and Jamison. Dixon didn’t take a shot past the 2 minute mark. And I don’t remember him guarding Artest and McGrady, who lit us up in the 4th.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 9:56 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It wasn't

“past the two minute mark” that hurt us. It was the entire fourth quarter up to that point.

by Jon L on Nov 21, 2008 9:59 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The reason we lost the lead

Had more to do with atrocious defense. They hit too many 3’s.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 10:00 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So we may as well just cut Dixon

and rattle off the wins with Dee Brown. Makes perfect sense to me.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 10:03 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes

Actually. I’ve been saying this as far back as the preseason.

Dee Brown doesn’t hurt the team. Juan Dixon does.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Nov 21, 2008 10:04 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is remarkably silly

Juan Dixon ended seven fourth-quarter possessions with a either a contested long jumper or a turnover. Caron Butler ended five. Antawn Jamison ended one in the last 11 minutes. Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison are a million times better than Juan Dixon. And it wasn’t like Dixon tried to get them the ball and failed, he just isolated, pounded the dribble and took contested 20 footers that are never good shots.

So he hit a couple of those shots tonight, great. But that’s not the point. The biggest problem this team has had down the stretch is that they can’t get the ball to their star players. When Juan Dixon ends more possessions than Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler combined, it’s a huge problem.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Nov 21, 2008 10:01 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It doesn't just matter how many minutes you play...

It’s when you play them. Why did Eddie put his low minute guys in during critical minutes of the 4th quarter? Foul trouble, rest, veteran leadership don’t cut it. There is no excuse for putting in a lineup that can’t score and can’t defend. Did Eddie have money on the game?

What happened to Nick Young and Dee Brown, who can actually make plays?

JVG made several comments about Eddies substitutions. If it’s obvious to hime why not our coaching staff.

by NeverNervousPervis on Nov 21, 2008 9:46 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

D. Brown +4 J. Dixon -13

It’s not just stats it’s how you impact the flow of the offense and defense. That’s why Eddie’s substitutions killed us. Songaila which must mean badly timed foul in Lithuanian also was -13.

by NeverNervousPervis on Nov 21, 2008 9:55 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So Dixon is the reason we lost the game?

Even though he played the majority of his minutes WITHOUT Jamison and Butler, while Dee Brown did?

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 10:02 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Huh?

Dixon played the last 7:09 with Jamison and Butler. During that time, we were outscored by 12 points.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Nov 21, 2008 10:05 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Look, you people are all frothing at the mouth about Dixon hogging the ball, but he only took 8 shots. The offense doesn’t stall solely because of Dixon, it stalls because we have very little movement and absolutely no post-up threat other than McGee, who never plays in the end stretch.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 10:08 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He played 18 minutes!

Ended nine possessions. Was a -13. Ended more fourth-quarter possessions than Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison combined.

I think you’re just trying to start an argument.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Nov 21, 2008 10:12 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm not starting an argument

I’m pointing at that blaming every loss on Dixon (which has happened the past several games) is purely ridiculous.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 10:13 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What exactly are you talking about?

Did you read yesterday’s post about the Hawks game? Were you here for any of the first three games? Do you only read what you want to read? The last one is a rhetorical question, I know the answer is yes.

Now I know you’re starting an argument for the sake of argument.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Nov 21, 2008 10:16 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Haha

Calm down, no one is trying to fight, just pointing out that the buzzer hit and everyone was immediately saying “This one’s on Juan!” I can see maybe making that argument after the last game, but on a decent shooting night I don’t see how that argument is made. Isn’t it possible that this teammates who were supposed to hit shots didn’t? What about our lack of a credible inside threat other than McGee (and on a blue moon, Blatche)? Why is no one complaining about Stevenson’s abysmal 3-12 shooting? I don’t see any issues with having your point guard shoot the ball if he’s capable.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 10:22 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You're once again believing what you want to believe
just pointing out that the buzzer hit and everyone was immediately saying "This one’s on Juan!"

The reaction was “WTF Juan,” not necessarily “This is on Juan.” There’s a major, major difference. If you’d ever read anything here, you know things are never that simple. But Juan Dixon’s shot-jacking really hurt us.

I can see maybe making that argument after the last game, but on a decent shooting night I don’t see how that argument is made.

Notwithstanding the fallacy of the above argument, the “good” shooting night is not the problem. The problem is that, even with a “good” shooting night, Juan Dixon is half the offensive thread Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison are. Nobody is gearing their defense to stop Juan Dixon. So when Juan Dixon steals shots from the previous two players, it makes the team much less dangerous. And that played a major role in the collapse down the stretch.

Isn’t it possible that this teammates who were supposed to hit shots didn’t? What about our lack of a credible inside threat other than McGee (and on a blue moon, Blatche)?

With all that in the fold, we were still winning most of the game.

Why is no one complaining about Stevenson’s abysmal 3-12 shooting?

Stevenson stinks. There’s no point in complaining about him right now.

I don’t see any issues with having your point guard shoot the ball if he’s capable.

Juan Dixon is not capable. Juan Dixon has never been capable. Juan Dixon is a small guard who shoots too much, hits too few of those shots and, save for one 17-game sample in Toronto, cannot pass. He is not Juan Dixon at Maryland anymore. Nick Young plays more like Juan Dixon, but is about twice as efficient. Nick Young deserved to be in the lineup.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

You’re attributing viewpoints to me and others than just don’t exist. I don’t appreciate that.

by Mike Prada on Nov 21, 2008 10:42 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You think

Dixon is terrible, I don’t. Difference of opinion, yes. Certainly not a lack of reading comprehension, you just laid out your argument in the post above.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 11:03 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The lack of reading comprehension

Came when you claimed people here were blaming Dixon for every loss.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Nov 21, 2008 11:10 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't believe it was solely Dixon,

but he did not play well, and EJ kept him in the game when he should’ve been on the bench. The combination of those two things certainly didn’t help.

by Jon L on Nov 21, 2008 10:06 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If you think

Dee Brown subbing for Dixon would have sealed the deal for us tonight, I don’t think you fully realize how depleted our frontcourt is.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 10:09 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Aren't

both Brown and Dixon guards?

by Jon L on Nov 21, 2008 10:10 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No

I mean the frontcourt, as in we’re relying on Andre Blatche and Etan Thomas to rebound and score inside.

by KShark28 on Nov 21, 2008 10:11 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Blatche

finished 6-9 with 14 points and 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. He hasn’t played that way every night, but tonight at least he wasn’t the problem offensively.

Personally I think his and McGee’s early foul issues forced EJ’s hand a little bit in playing Songaila so much, but now I don’t even know what this argument is about anymore.

by Jon L on Nov 21, 2008 10:17 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dee Brown, Antonio Daniels, Nick Young

Same thing.

Stop building strawmen.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Nov 21, 2008 10:11 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Eddie Jordan is the reason we lost the game

He refuses to play players in roles where they can shine and refuses to create rotation where players can know game in, game out what’s expected of them. Juan is not a point guard, he is a scorer. Songaila is a forward not a center. etc, etc. Minutes for each player swing wildly from game to game. You can start a game and basically not see the floor after that even if you have been effective.

by NeverNervousPervis on Nov 21, 2008 10:09 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I totally agree

Andray Blatche is in the process of having the game of his life, and EJ believes Etan Thomas is going to do what for us coming into the game in the 4th? I was thrilled that EJ had the nerve to finally bench Etan but I should have known better.

Dear Diary, JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!

by Evander holyfield on Nov 21, 2008 10:15 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well

Blatche had 5 fouls, so EJ was probably using Etan to make sure Blatche could play at the end of the 4th. I was fine with bringing Etan in, it was keeping Songaila in so long that bothered me.

by Jon L on Nov 21, 2008 10:19 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Eddie need to think about a stable and short rotation

We don’t have the talent right now to go 11 deep. Etan definitely shouldn’t have seen the floor and Dixon should have seen less and when he was in should have been moving without the ball. MCGee and Blatche should have used up thir fouls in a tough match up vs. Yao.

by NeverNervousPervis on Nov 21, 2008 10:24 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

On the bright side

The Raptors lost to the Nets thanks to a 3 by Vince Carter to send it in to OT and an alley-oop in OT to win it.

So it could’ve been worse tonight. Not a whole lot worse, but worse.
