We won't be the Spurs.

Before Gil came out and said it today, I have been thinking the exact same thing about this year. Could it be better for us to end up in last place this season and pick toward the top of the draft?

The answer is NO. There is no Tim Duncan in this draft. There is nobody who will serve as the foundation for the Wizards first dynasty. In my opinion, you are only as good as your record. According to our record, we are the worst team in the league.

I love college basketball and the draft. I pumped JaVale McGee from the beginning - I'm not too surprised at what he has been able to do thus far. Although the college season has just begun...here's my question(s) -- Is there anyone in college basketball or overseas who you think could be a "franchise changer" a la Tim Duncan? If the season ended today and we had the first pick, who do you take? Let's assume Gilbert comes back 100% next year.

Even coupled with a full recovery from Arenas, I don't see anyone that could have a huge impact on this franchise. Duncan came in and created an identity WITH an aging David Robinson and then Robinson willingly allowed the identity of that team to change into what it is today. That is extremely rare.

There are a few prospects that I will be keeping an eye on now that we have started so poorly. This is also the order that I would pick them in, today.

1. Blake Griffin PF, Oklahoma - Eventually, he would replace Jamison in the starting lineup. Arenas, Young, Butler, Griffin, McGee. That is an exciting lineup. His effort is always there, he scores and rebounds well. He could bang with the power forwards that abuse Jamison.

2. Brandon Jennings - PG - My favorite player not in the NBA. This guy is unreal...if you haven't watched his youtube clips, please do. He will be the best passer in this draft. He is a highlight reel waiting to happen and would be sick running the second squad. Need points? Jennings, Arenas, Butler, Jamison, McGee. Jennings gets EVERYONE the ball. He decided to go play in Europe instead of at Arizona this year.

3. Al Farouq-Aminu SF, Wake Forest - Watched his tape and thought I was watching a more athletic Luol Deng. He'd be another long body to throw out there and would provide a reliable backup for Caron Butler. I keep praying that McGuire gets his shit together and becomes that consistent back up.

4. Stephen Curry PG/SG, Davidson - There is going to be a ton of people hating on Curry when it comes to how his game relates to the pros. I think the kid is going to be silly good. There's nothing I can say here that you haven't heard. Most unstoppable player in college basketball, hands down.

5. DeMar DeRozen SG, USC - I haven't seen an athlete like him since James White. I can't wait to watch USC games this year just to watch him play. He could move up my list with a big year. If he is the best option when we pick, pack your bags DeShawn.

This is not our year. There is no denying that. Sure we could put together a nice season and get in the playoffs again. Can we beat the Celtics, Cavs, or Pistons in seven games? No way. Personally, I'd sit Arenas all year if it would make sure his knee would hold up next season. I can be patient. I am getting exactly what I wanted from the Wizards right now. I wanted Nick Young to be that scoring option off of the bench and challenge Stevenson for that starting spot. I wanted McGee to prove everyone wrong and he is. If that continues and Andray Blatche gets it together - this year is a success regardless of the record.

I've been thinking the same thoughts

But no mention of Ricky Rubio?! Kid can PLAY. Not only did he play well at the olympics, he even held his own during the gold medal game against the US. I think hes the first pg i want, before Curry or Jennings. I know a lot of people are going to say “well we already have Gilbert at the 1”, but he can easily shift to the sg spot, or Rubio (or whatever pg we get) can come off the bench. All that being said, Griffin is probably the best fit for the team because of position.

Rubio...

Something about the kid scares me. He doesn’t play with the tenacity of Jennings which is why I’d take Jennings first. Plus…he’s a lefty which is awesome.

Agree

Griffin fits better – but Rubio is going to be a star in the NBA.

I agree that this doesn't seem like a very impactful draft lottery

And even if we do continue the season at this losing pace, I am thrilled to see Nick Young and JaVale McGee’s progress. I am disappointed with Andray Blatche, as it seems like he is not grasping the simple and extremely important fundamental aspects of the game and continues to make the same mistakes, but at least we have the entire season for him to prove himself.

With that being said, If we do end up with a top 5 draft pick, that gives us a huge trading piece to use along with our expiring contracts of AD and Etan, and the beautiful expiring contract of Brendan Haywood (if we do indeed have to include Brendan in any trade it should land us a VERY nice free agent). We could also substitute the still young and promising Blatche with a modest contract in place of Brendan (though I’d hope our #1 and ten million in expiring contracts from AD and Etan might be enough to get us some nice production, Blatche and Brendan are players that could net us an extraordinary free agent).

If this season ends up to be a “rebuilding” year in which we develop our young talent and get a top draft pick, it gives us that many more options in trade negotiations. Remember, our #5 pick of Devin Harris with Jerry Stackhouse and Christian Laettner landed us Antawn Jamison, and we all see how AJ has improved our team. With the creative mind of Ernie Grunfeld, a #1 pick, and three expiring contracts (with one that will for sure be a sexy trading piece) in one of the biggest free agent classes in NBA history, I’m sure we could have an extremely exciting off season.

Ricky Rubio
Is there anyone in college basketball or overseas who you think could be a “franchise changer” a la Tim Duncan? If the season ended today and we had the first pick, who do you take?

You conveniently left out Ricky Rubio – who is in the top 3 in most of the 2009 NBA Mock Drafts

Here’s a nice youtube video for you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12FOZsjWxwk

When you’re watching this, remember that he’s not playing against 18 and 19 year old College students – but against the best European Players. Also, while watching – imagine all those oop passes and fast break passes going to guys like Butler, Young and JaVale McGee.

Of all the players in the 2009 Draft, he has the best chance of becoming a Star.

Ricky Rubio does look pretty sick

The only thing I doubt would be our defense in our backcourt with Arenas and Rubio – two small guards letting other explosive guards into the lane a lot. With Nick Young emerging as a starting 2 guard in the league and possibly a star, and with Arenas next to him at the point, our backcourt looks pretty nice right now.

I agree that he has the best chance of becoming a star and it would be hard for us to pass him up if we had the chance, but that brings up the question of do you draft for need or for skill with two or more highly skilled choices on the board.

If we had the choice between Rubio and Blake Griffin, I would have to pick up Griffin. He has had 18 and 19-rebound games this year already, and with his hustle and scoring down low to go with that much needed rebounding, he’d fit in quite nicely with the Wiz.

Playing Rubio with Arenas shouldnt be a problem

First of all, except for Chris Paul no pg has come into the league ready to play and be effective, so bringing him off the bench at first would probably be the route to go. Second Arenas is a pretty solid 6’4, one of the bigger pgs around, and theoretically should be able to handle some 2 guards. Does that mean it wont be a problem defensively? not by a long shot, but the trade off comes as most 2 guards wont be able to keep up (hopefully this stays true after his return). Arenas has also shown that he can play off the ball plenty, so its not like hes against doing it at least some. And the Wizards generally win by scoring a lot, not with defense, so the offensive fit is probably more of a concern.

As far as whether its a good idea to take him over Griffin? If we can agree that Rubio has a better chance to become a legit superstar, then it comes down to, how far behind is Griffin’s potential? And how does Arenas look after his return? We should probably throw in, how does Gilbert react to having a replacement being drafted a season after he got his big deal?

I loved Rubio’s game when I saw him during the Olympics, but I havent seen Griffin much, so id rather withhold my opinion on who to draft (assuming we get the choice) until i do.

No - we won't be the Spurs

And, NO, there’s probably not a Tim Duncan in this draft…. but there is possibly the next Steve Nash (Rubio), or the next Dikembe Motombo (Thabeet), or the next Carlos Boozer (Griffin).

Healthy, the Wizards are not that far from competing for the top spots in the Eastern Conference – and for the NBA Championship. They are NOT there, but they’re only a few pieces away.

Now, imagine this:

The Wizards end up with a miserable season, they may have a chance at a top 3 pick in the draft….

Ricky Rubio – the phenominal Spanish PG, who is going to be a star in the NBA. This kid has had NBA GM’s drooling over him since he was 13. (He’s still only 18 now!!! ). We shoud be so lucky… Imagine him paired with Arenas as SG…! You think the Wizards throw a lot of alley-oops now? Wait until you see this kid… No one would be able to keep our back court duo out of the lane; guys like Haywood and McGee would be getting dunks left and right, and guys like Butler, Stevenson and Young would be getting wide open looks from outside from all the drive-and-dish assists.

Blake Griffin – the 6’10" can’t miss PF from Oklahoma; who at Worst Case is another David Lee. Strong and powerful inside player with fluid moves, and the ability to finish inside. Also an oustanding rebounder. (gee whiz, could the Wizards use a guy like that?)

Hasheem Thabeet – 7’3" Center from UConn. Put McGee at PF and you’d have two guys with incredible size, wingspan, mobility, athleticism , leaping ability and explosiveness. NO ONE would be able to get a shot off inside against the Wiz with that duo patrolling the paint ! Heck, have the other three just patrol the 3-point line and make sure they contest outside shots – who cares if someone tries to drive the lane!

NOW – Assume Ernie G. has had 3 good drafts (Young, McGee, and the 2009 pick) – Now he’s ready to deal the Wizards expiring contracts. As Evander Holyfield said above, those expiring contracts ($20 Million) are “sexy trading pieces” for teams interested in participating in one of the best free agent classes in NBA history in 2010. Could Eddie turn those expiring contracts (Daniels, Haywood & Etan Thomas) into the pieces the Wizards need to get over the hump? I think so.

Could the Wizards pick up players like: Shane Battier?, Joe Johnson?, AK47?, Emeka Okafor?

http://www.bulletsforever.com/2008/7/31/583970/eyeing-the-prize-nine-pote

Could Ernie turn those expiring contracts in to even better players? (ala Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol)?

Yeah – I’m with Evander Holyfield – I think this off-season will be very very interesting. And I’m looking forward to next year, when I believe the Wizards will finally have all the pieces they need to compete for a Title.

There is no such thing as a “can’t miss” prospect.

except

in hindsight

wizards fans should be cautious about hype for number one overall picks

by joshp on Nov 21, 2008 7:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No, you're right

But a top 3 pick is as close to “can’t miss” in the NBA as you can get…. Especially when Ernie Grunfeld is doing the picking.

Other than Kwame Brown – I can’t think of another #1 #2 or #3 pick in the last several years that actually stinks. (ie: is no longer in the league….. is a perennial end-of-the-bench player….etc….)

OK

I didn’t realize this was the Washington Post Insider blog – where EVERYTHING has to be caveatted seven ways from Sunday….

I did say that I thought a top 3 pick is as close to "can’t miss" in the NBA as you can get…………… when Ernie Grunfeld is doing the picking.

I also did say last several years

Can we just stick to recent history?
Or do we have to dig up supporting arguments from the 50’s and 60’s too?

2008 1.1 Derrick Rose Currently starting for the Chicago Bulls
2008 1.2 Michael Beasley – Currently starting for the Miami Heat
2008 1.3 O.J. Mayo – Currently starting for the Memphis Grizzlies

2007 1.1 Greg Oden – Currently starting for the Trailblazers
2007 1.2 Kevin Durant – Currently starting for the SuperSonics
2007 1.3 Al Horford – Currently starting for the Hawks

2006 1.1 Andrea Bargnani – Was starting, now coming off the bench for the Raptors after the JO trade.
2006 1.2 LaMarcus Aldridge – Currently starting for the Trailblazers
2006 1.3 Adam Morrison – Bobcats

2005 1.1 Andrew Bogut – currently starting for the Bucks
2005 1.2 Marvin Williams – Currently starting for the Hawks
2005 1.3 Deron Williams – Currently starting for the Jazz

Now – name me one of those 12 players from the last four drafts above that wouldn’t be at least a competent reserve on the Wizards right now…

Would you consider any of those picks a complete bust – right now?

I think that a reasonable argument can be made that at least 11 of those 12 players can be considered “can’t miss” since they are, or were, STARTERS in the League – and that the book is still out on Morrison.

Yeah

But you have to look at the guy that actually picked Morrison….

Here’s some guys picked directly after Morrison:
Tyrus Thomas- sometime (50) starter for Chicago
Brandon Roy – starting for Portland
Randy Foye – sometime (50) starter for Minnesota
Rudy Gay – starting for Memphis

I wasn’t saying you’re wrong. Other than Morrison everything you said was true. And Morrison could be an effective bench player. It’s not his fault Michael Jordan is a dumb shit as GM.

Blake Griffin update looks pretty good. I don’t have a college team that I root for year in year out, but I think I might follow Oklahoma just a bit this year. Dude looks like he can dominate.

And you are ready to write off this draft class after a couple weeks of College Basketball? So you have had the chance to watch enough games to judge all the draft eligible prospects this year in that short amount of time? Yeah there was no consensus number one pick going into this season, but why don’t we hold off opinions about the draft class until at least a couple months into the college season.

Like someone else said, Blake Griffin is nasty and it is that nastiness that this team is missing. I would also love to get one of the young PG’s either Rubio or Jennings both players drip with potential.

by Buddha Brown on Nov 24, 2008 10:25 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

are you ready to crown this draft class? even at the end of a college season, its impossible to tell whether or not a draft class contains a franchise-changing type of player. thats why tanking is a poor option

by joshp on Nov 24, 2008 12:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No tanking...

Just giving minutes to people that need to grow for next season. Nick Young, Andray Blatche, and JaVale McGee should receive the “fence” minutes that Eddie gives to Songaila, Stevenson, and Thomas.

If I was Ed Tapscott, my first major change would be to insert Nick Young into the starting lineup.

Totally agree

I want to see how Nick plays as a starter.

I'm a Kings fan

I have no personal stake in any of this, but I think the Bullets need Griffin. He’s a physical inside player who can give Les Boulez a guy to dump the ball into. It also allows them to slide Butler over to the 2, and Jamison to the 3 at times when the teams goes big. Either way the Bullets would be better off letting Arenas get completely healthy before letting him return. Getting Griffin would be a huge plus for this franchise long term, and would go a long way to getting whatever coach Ernie Grunfeld wanted.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on

by pookeyguru on Nov 25, 2008 4:16 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Trade...

I could analyze potential draft picks forever…but in the end I think Ernie is going to trade our high pick for a proven player, probably at the 4 spot.
