Open Thread: Regular Season Game 9 v. Atlanta Hawks

Washington Wizards at Atlanta Hawks, Nov 19, 2008 7:00 PM EST

I have a meeting now, but I'll be back to chat it up in the game thread shortly.

Atlanta's struggling, having lost their last four games after a 6-0 start.  Two of those losses were to New Jersey, so that makes me feel a little better about us losing to the Nets.

For a more comprehensive game preview, Peachtree Hoops has what you need.

GO WIZARDS!

UPDATE: Dee & JaVale will start tonight, Al Horford is out with an ankle injury.

Our prayers have possibly been answered

Eddie is going to start Dee Brown and Javale McGee. Oh Al Horford AND Josh Smith are not playing. If we still happen to lose then I don’t care what any says; we suck!

GO WIZARDS!!

As a former McGee-as-a-starter skeptic,

I’ve support this. It seems everyone who was conservative about this before has come around after the last Heat game.

After reading that Washington Time blog, and thinking about it only slightly, I think I like Dee Brown starting too.

by Aldo on Nov 19, 2008 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

Dee?

Didn’t see that one coming.

by MR on Nov 19, 2008 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

Me either

But now that I think about it, Juan has played his best when he comes off the bench. Hopefully he will revert back to the way he was playing when he was coming off the bench and hopefully McGee doesn’t somehow get the jitters and start to look like a rookie that isn’t ready to start in the NBA.

by bigrm18 on Nov 19, 2008 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

I wonder if starting 3 PGs

in the first 8 games sets a NBA record in futility.

It wouldn't shock me either

But at least Stevenson is still capable of playing competent NBA basketball for 20-25 minutes a game, so I’m not as worked up about him starting over Nick Young as I was about Etan starting over JaVale.

by Jake Whitacre on Nov 19, 2008 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

The only problem

I have with Deshawn starting is that he can’t create off the dribble – giving us 2 guards (no matter the PG ) who can’t create for themselves. With Gil it’s fine b/c the floor is opened up and he can spot up for 3s.

by Jake Whitacre on Nov 19, 2008 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

Ugh.

To paraphrase Bill Simmons: Etan couldn’t score 20 points in two hours if he was in the gym by himself.

by Pryme on Nov 19, 2008 7:32 PM EST reply actions

Only down by 2?

I’m fine with that. By the way, I can’t support any lineup that has Andray Blatche guarding Joe Johnson.

by Matt K. on Nov 19, 2008 7:33 PM EST reply actions

More Pech

A few plays ago, when Blatche had the ball on the wing, both Thomas and Pech dove to the basket, which is theoretically good, but then they both just stood there when the pass didn’t come. It was obvious Pech knew he wasn’t supposed to be there with Thomas, but equally obvious he had no idea where to go.

It ended well in that Pech got the rebound, but then didn’t end well when Dixon travelled.

So...

I’m presuming Eddie’s drawing up a High Iso for Caron, telling him to hold it as long as possible.

I could Nick trying to create a shot.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Sounds about right

I want to see him attack the rim … but you KNOW he will pull up for the 15 footer.

I'm actually more upset about Nick than Juan

How do you pick the ball up off the floor and shoot a completely out-of-rhythm fadeaway?

One game

I really don’t want to have this argument now, but the guy may be the most inefficient scorer in the league.

And I’m a huge UMD fan too.

He can't create in the NBA

But he tries to shoot off the dribble and he just cant do it.

Getting buckets since 2003.

Stevenson 2-9 from 3 pt line

I’m late and not watching the game. Why was he shooting a 3 with a one pt. lead?

So what were the Wiz Kids doing

Sounds like they wasted some time and that was the best they could come up with?

How could that possible have gone any worse?

Well

The real problem as has been stated many times is that Juan is NOT a PG and should not be asked to handle the ball at the end. I believe strongly that Caron is actually the best PG we have on this team.

by GodWuzAWiz on Nov 19, 2008 9:22 PM EST reply actions

i dont nkow about best pg

but he def should have gotten the inbounds pass

by SidVicious25 on Nov 19, 2008 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

Caron as a point guard

Is more than likely detrimental to this team.

I mean, that's essentially what he was last year

He was a point forward that initiated the offense.

by Mike Prada on Nov 19, 2008 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

Which isn't his role

I believe that he would explode if he had someone to get him the ball where he didn’t have to create his own shot every single time. Because he is so good, he can get by at point, but having an actual distributor would take him to another level.

I mean I agree to a certain extent

But Caron was the team’s best passer last year. I see no reason why he can’t be the same this time around.

He’s just not passing and the team just isn’t moving. I honestly think they don’t want to run the Princeton anymore. There’s just no movement after a while.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Nov 19, 2008 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

No one is going backdoor and their movement overall is completely stagnant. Additionally, with no true center, the pick and roll is not a threat; countless times last year Brendan would come off the screen and turn around just in time to slam it home. Eddie’s offense would work with a competent unit, but this team is a bit much.

There are a few reasons it doesn’t work. One is that Etan is absolutely worthless. Another is that our shooters don’t space the floor well.

But the point is moot. Any offense will run screen and rolls.

by Mike Prada on Nov 19, 2008 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure if you're disagreeing

But my point was that Caron’s passing abilities are limited because the screen and roll is nonexistent, mostly because Etan isn’t even D-League caliber.

All true

Which is scary. I mean, Caron is the only guy with confident ball handling skills and the ability to pass at all.

My question is

Why are we only getting to the line 12 times in one game? I’ve seen Lebron get that by himself countless times…

by KShark28 on Nov 19, 2008 9:27 PM EST reply actions

Minutes Watch

Butler played 40 minutes
Jamison played just under 37 minutes
Stevenson played just under 34 minutes
NY played about 28 and a half minutes
McGee played 22 and a half minutes
Brown played about 19 and a half minutes
Blatche played 17 minutes
Thomas played 16 and a half minutes
Dixon played just under 15 minutes
Songaila played 6 minutes
Pecherov played 4 minutes
McGuire gets a DNP-CD.

It's tough

Dixon was giving them nothing, and I’m not sure NY’s up for playing more than 30 minutes at this point (much as we might wish he is).

Yeah

I think it says more about the sad state of the team than Eddie.

And while I think losing Haywood was devastating, we’re seeing how much we miss roger also.

by hibachi on Nov 19, 2008 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

I see McGee started

Did they run any plays for him or did he have to find his points on putbacks?

by nicefellow31 on Nov 19, 2008 9:30 PM EST reply actions

What do they do now?

Biggest problem I saw tonight was rebounding. Absolutely brutal down the stretch. That and the ill-advised shot selection.

I honestly don’t know if they can get more that 8 wins by 2009

by KShark28 on Nov 19, 2008 9:35 PM EST reply actions

Not enough McGee

They should also start running plays for him instead using him exclusively as a screener.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Nov 19, 2008 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

No easy answers

McGee’s rebounding will improve once he builds a little more upper body strength, I think. Both last night and tonight there were times where he could’ve pulled some down, but instead, let opponents take it away from him or at least make him fumble it.

Blatche was the team’s third-best rebounder last year (and second-best the year before that), and that ability has virtually disappeared this season. Two rebounds in 17 minutes tonight, two in 14 and a half minutes and one in 13 and a half minutes (his last three games) is abysmal.

Pecherov is a good rebounder, but tonight he was standing around a lot, and EJ seems reluctant to give him a lot of non-garbage time minutes. McGuire can’t seem to buy time on the court, in part because Butler plays so much and the Wizards need him to continue doing so.

Thomas was the best rebounder on the team in ‘06-’07, but that’s also disappeared this year. A lot of that is understandable, given what he’s been through and that he’s still working himself back, but it certainly doesn’t help the Wizards here and now.

In addition, the Wizards really don’t have any good rebounding guards. The guard with the best rebound rate last season was Mike Wilks, followed by Arenas. Eliminating those two due to sample size, the best rebounding guard was Nick Young at 5.8, almost a third of what the team leader’s (Jamison) was. Dixon’s rebound rate was in the mid-to-upper sixes last season with Detroit and Toronto, which is better but not really anything to aspire to.

In short, I think the answer is…wait until Haywood comes back.

Why don’t we ever see McGuire and Caron on the court together?
