Dan Shanoff is calling Roger Mason Jr. the offseason pickup of the year
"Great" -- Here's what Shanoff wrote:
The Spurs snagged him from the Wizards this summer, and with Tony Parker (and Manu Ginobili) out, Mason has stepped up as a starter. Last night, he scored a team-high 21, including the game-winning 3.
For the season, Mason is averaging 14.5 ppg and shooting 47.1 percent on 3s. His 35.3 mpg and 4.3 rpg are both second on the team, behind only Tim Duncan. You could argue the Spurs’ rebound from that 1-4 start to today’s 5-5 was largely from the value of Mason.

And if he were still a Wizard he’d be slumping like the rest.

I'd also like to add....
…that I’m happy for Roger. He deserved the opportunity and is taking advantage of it.

You are both right
And there wasn’t anyway to keep him unless the team was blown up (which I wouldn’t have minded).

I am happy for Roger Mason, but you also have to...
look at Nick Young’s numbers… The two men fill the same role. Young’s upside is far greater and his contribution to the Wizards this year is remarkably similar to Mason’s with the Spurs. I hope Roger has a great year for San Antonio and know he will continue to be appreciative of the opportunity he got here. But this is not a bone we need to pick over too excessively.
Kwame is doing ok in Detroit too, but that does not mean we should be shedding tears in our beers

I disagree
Right now, Roger is playing shooting guard for the Spurs -but he played a lot last year at Point for the Wizards. Without Ginobli and Parker, Mason is getting lots of playing time…. but if those two were still in the line-up, Roger would be used just like he was in Washington – coming on as the first guard off the bench to spell either Ginobli or Parker.
With Daniels down, Roger would have been a nice option… (curse that dreaded Luxury Tax)…. The combination of Mason and Young would have been nice to see this year – it worked well last year.

Yea, it comes down to...
Who would we rather have at point…Mason or Dixon?
Of course, the fact that we even have Dixon is circumstantial on Arenas’ 3rd surgery….Mason was long gone by then (not to mention that he’s more expensive).

Being right on the Mason-Dixon line – DC chose the less expensive option.
