Since he performed so abysmally last year, it's hard to justify McGuire playing 700 minutes again this year. But with Washington bringing back largely the same cast, I suppose it's conceivable that McGuire could again see action as an "energy" guy off the pine, especially if Oleksiy Pecherov can't get untracked. On the other hand, one has to imagine there are several better players trolling around in the D-League, and if McGuire's play doesn't improve perhaps the Wizards will realize that, too.

Okay but what's a BANGwagon?
Or maybe I don’t want to know. Is that one of them filthy internet things you naughty people? Whatever it is, I’m pretty sure I’m not “riding Dom’s bangwagon since 2007” Just saying…

Ha Ha!
I did notice the site title was recently ‘adjusted’ (I’m guessing by Jake), but failed to register the nature of the wagon.

Shockingly, that wasn't me
Frankly, I’m a little shocked because
A) I would generally be more likely to make a crazy title for the site…
B) I would be more likely to misspell something while doing it.
Maybe there’s some hidden meaning to the bangwagon phrase that Pradamaster will tell us about once his computer gets fixed. For what it’s worth, bangwagon isn’t defined on Urban Dictionary yet, so maybe there’s still hope.

Good, lord...
Back to this Hollinger cat. What’s with that guy? Does he even watch NBA games? Or at least follow the local beat reporting from each team?
I’m not so sure he doesn’t do his reporting from a windowless basement where he worships some magical glowing orb, which is really a plasma ball from Spencer Gifts, has an abacus he calls “my precious,” and a blow-up doll with a TI-82 taped over her (its?) face (or whatever calculator the kids are using these days).

Hollinger has a point
I’m a huge McGuire fan and think he’ll have a big year, but Hollinger’s got a point. McGuire and Young did turn the ball over far too often. Wizards would have been better served last year giving Mason and Songaila the Taser/da Bust minutes. With luck EJ and EG are right and these guys will deliver in 08-09.
By the way, the NiYo Q&A is not very encouraging. He seems to have no idea what his real weaknesses are.

Turnovers are What Rookies are Known For
It comes with the inexperience. As they get more experienced, they turn the ball over less. Eddie was already playing DSong and Mason a ton, so it wouldn’t have benefited him to play them even more while his rookies were sitting on the bench and not developing. If anything, Eddie should have played NY and DMac more last season.

I think D-Mac is being asked to handle the ball more than he did in college (I think)

not sure i understand the taser obsession
he looked okay in a few summer league games, and i love his shot blocking ability, but as far as an overall game, he’s shown us pretty much zip in real action. hollinger is quite right to point that out. maybe hollinger isn’t giving him any credit as someone who has potential, but he’s right that the guy can’t shoot or handle the ball, and hasn’t exactly been bruce bowen on defense (other than a dramatic blocked shot here and there), so hollinger again seems correct in pointing out that dmac is essentially an energy guy. and i thought people around here hated energy guys? i have yet to hear a good word about michael ruffin on this site and he was the ultimate energy guy, taking that role about as far as one could take it.
actually, correction, i REALLY don’t understand the taser obsession.
by DarrellWalkerFan on Oct 10, 2008 9:44 AM EDT 0 recs
wa-wa-wait....
Who doesn’t like energy guys?
I’ve given some compliments to Ruffin before (not sure if they came on this site)…but the problem with that guy was energy was all he had. He was anti-offense.
Ruffin also played more like a big man, but he wasn’t a big man. Ruffin and McGuire are the same height (6-9), but Ruffin is about 25 pounds heavier (not saying that you were trying to compare the two).
I may not be as “excited” about McGuire as Prada and Jake….but many teams have an unheralded fan favorite…why not latch onto this kid?
Yea, right now he really just has energy….but he has the T.U.P. for so much more.

C'mon
Calm down. It’s a bit of a joke, though I do believe the dude has potential.
It’s one thing to be an energy guy at age 29. It’s another to be one at age 22.

Michael Ruffin . . .
is one of the reasons there has been so much coach-whining (as you put it) by the fans the last few years.

pretty much
i’m not kidding when i’ve never heard a good thing about ruffin on this site, and prada that wasn’t solely directed at you.
i’ll probably get beaten down on this point, but i’m struggling to think of an energy guy we’ve had on the roster in the arenas era other than ruffin. maybe etan? calvin booth may have been a fan favorite, but i wouldn’t call him an energy guy. popeye jones and tyronn lue have been gone a long time.
i’d say there is a very good chance that dmac, if he sticks in the league, becomes ruffin-esque in that he’s “anti-offense”. maybe he’ll develop a bruce bowen three point shot from the corner, but i think it’s pretty unrealistic to think his ball handling skills or mid-range game will improve as much as they need to for him to be a threat otherwise. ruffin was great at disrupting the other team’s offense. he was a pest and he always brought it. he just had less than no offense himself.
as for dmac, i’ve pretty much never heard anything other then the highest praise from the posters around here, similar to what i’m starting to see with mcgee. if the “riding the dmac bandwagon since 2007” slogan is a joke, i think i’m probably not the only one around here that didn’t pick up on it… that is, i think a lot of people here wholeheartedly believe that dmac is going to bust out this year and be a stud.
if that happens i’d be ecstatic, but i’d also be very surprised.

in the meantime
>> but many teams have an unheralded fan favorite…why not latch onto this kid?
mostly i wish we weren’t depending on him being our backup small forward this year. despite the eternal optimism, that could end up bad for all parties involved.
i expect we’ll see blatche, songaila, and jamison trying to play at the 3 a lot this year. or we go small with deshawn or nick young there. either approach is problematic, unless dmac breaks out…
which is a reason why hollinger’s analysis is significant and isn’t necessarily to be taken lightly – the joke could be on us.

Remember the Hornets game last year?
I think it was the game where Deshawn hit that unbelievable 3 for the win. Anyway, either through injuries or foul trouble, we were really short-handed so DM got big minutes guarding Chris Paul at the top of the key. He stopped CP3 twice in a row and I’ve never jumped up and down on my couch like that. By the numbers DM may have had a bad year, but he’s shown enough flashes to warrant excitement.
What I’d like to see out of him this year is a mean streak. His career’s ultra best-case scenario is to develop into some type of Bruce Bowen/Dennis Rodman player, but he won’t ever sniff their success unless he gets angry, mean, and maybe even a little dirty.
by jvflail on Oct 10, 2008 10:36 AM EDT 0 recs
yeah
i’m not sure why good player has to equal offensive efficiency. Especially in a squad as defensively challenged as ours. He also did a good job guarding lebron at a few points through the season last year. He’s not exactly a lock down defender, but he’s not afraid to body up and he moves his feet well for his size. He also is a rebounding monster.

Don't Forget
This game! D-Mac was a beast in that one. Anyone who saw that game remembers exactly what I’m talking about. That was a very close game, one in which we needed overtime to win it, and we were playing in our first game without Caron. Every time our offense got stagnant towards the end, D-Mac would snatch a tough offensive rebound to keep our possession alive. One time he literally reached out his arm and ripped away a rebound that was heading straight towards a Raptor player. That was the first time I jumped up and down for D-Mac. He warrants excitement.

Yep...that was the game Anthony Peeler hit a crazy three
At the buzzer to send it into OT.
The Wiz were up 4 with 11 seconds to go in reg. and managed to get the game into OT….
But yea, D-Mac came to ball that night…..I recollect.

He was on the team in 04/05
He only averaged 13.2 minutes per game in his one year here. He was forgettable.

I think this is good news.
If there’s one thing the Wizards do consistently, its make sure that Hollinger’s predictions are always wrong. So, to me, this guarantees a leap forward for McGuire.

Taser Tag
This is a big year to prove Taser’s worth in the NBA and the jury is still out. Hollinger does not like the Wizards every season.
