Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

For that reason, Jordan said he would rely on a "veteran rotation" tonight -- one that will likely include forward Darius Songaila and guard Juan Dixon off the bench -- and evaluate his young players on a day-to-day basis.

The Reason:
The Wizards finished 2-5, were blown out three times and often struggled when the team’s starters and veterans were not on the floor.

I don’t see why this is such a bad thing……I mean, Jordan will have to use the youth, he just won’t “rely” on them. Gotta get this first win under our belt.

Huh?

What makes you think Darius Songaila and Juan Dixon give the team a better chance of winning? Why is this first game so important? Why are we ignoring history, when we’ve gotten off to slow starts with terrible player rotations?

Ivan’s wrong too. The entire team struggled, not just the young guys. Did he not watch the first quarter of the first game against New Orleans? Or the second quarter of the Spurs game? Why is it okay for the vets to suck when its not okay for the young guys to do the same?

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

I'll agree....

….that Ivan’s assessment was a little off, but I still don’t have an issue with Jordan trusting the vets first and foremost.

Jordan wants the team to run the offense and defense like they’ve practiced…….and the guys who have opening night experience under their belt are more likely to maintain a controlled environment and not get distracted.

Would you agree that the vets are more dependable than youth right now?……and that Jordan is looking for players he can depend on?

No, I don’t agree. Eddie should be looking for better players. Nick Young and Andray Blatche are better than Darius Songaila and Juan Dixon, opening-night “experience” be dammed. They’ve proven that in regular-season games last year.

I feel you on......

Especially on Young…we gotta have his scoring off the bench (that’s why I think he plays at least 24 minutes).

But sometimes….looking for better players doesn’t necessarily translate to giving yourself the best chance to win.

Look, I’d love to play Blatche and Young over D-Song and Dixon (and maybe by “veteran,” Jordan means Dixon over Dee Brown)…..but Andray needs to get his damn head in the game and earn some minutes before Eddie just gives him time on the court……besides, AB averaged 20 minutes a game last year. With Haywood out, is there a reason to think he won’t be on the court for at least that amount of time tonight?

I think you are reading too much into Eddie Jordan’s comments.

I should clarify

Blatche has earned the right to be given 20 minutes a game based on how he played last season. This preseason should have been the chance for him to earn more than that, not for him to maintain his rotation spot. His failure means he should be no more than a backup big at this point.

His failure shouldn’t mean he falls completely out of the rotation.

Also

Eddie explicitly said “veteran rotation.” What makes you think he’ll use the youth?

Because....

Those are the only “vets” on the bench. Nick Young will have to play…..Blatche and/or Pecherov will have to play. We both know the rotation will be larger than seven.

We both know the rotation will be larger than seven.

That’s not an assumption I can make based on past history.

If they are the solid veteran presence,

…then I will ask if Jordan cares about talent at all. Isn’t coaching about developing the young cats?

I'm going to wait until the game is played

to pass judgment on Jordan’s rotation. BUT, I will be very disappointed if Dixon gets major burn over NY. That would be a massive mistake.

Getting buckets since 2003.

Jordan needs to win this opener...

The young guys will play tonight, I think, but the experienced guys will play first… Low risk is the best strategy at this point.

by khrabb on Oct 29, 2008 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I feel ya....

Same here – and I’ll be equally disappointed if Songaila gets Blatche’s minutes……

All during Training Camp, we heard about the 2nd unit (the young guys) “pushing” the Vets…. Playing competitively against the Starters – and winning their share of scrimmages.

When the preseason games arrived, we see the Starters playing poorly; yet the Youngsters get called out
( I STILL don’t know what Pech did wrong to have Jordan specifically call him out after one of the games )….

I sure hope we see the 10-man (or more) rotations tonight that we saw in preseason.

More than 10

Is unnecessary. We don’t need both Dixon and Brown playing, and we don’t need Pech on the floor (unless we somehow think he’s ahead of Blatche). 9/10 is about right.

Getting buckets since 2003.

Actually

If we see 11-12 man rotations… it would possibly be a good thing….

Think blowouts…
