Open Thread: Preseason Game 4 vs. New Orleans Hornets
Washington Wizards at New Orleans Hornets, Oct 14, 2008 2:00 PM EDT
Adding more later. For now, begin chatting about this 2 p.m. game live from Germany.
[Editor's Note: If you're just getting home or whatever and you're about to tune in to catch the rest of the game, I'd highly advise making other plans. It's a nice autumn day, take a walk, throw the pigskin around, go check out a new restaurant, or do something. Just trust me, you really don't want to see this. -Jake]

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
47 to 9?
Looks like someone didn’t want to go to Europe.
And by someone I mean everyone.

Seriously
Being down by more than 40 before halftime? Has anyone ever done that?

This is honestly pissing me off
Yea, it’s a preseason game, but a butt whipping like this, I would say, is a direct result of most of the players openly expressing that they’d rather not go to Europe.
Which….I translate to not being ready……which makes me mad because they’re not taking preseason preparation seriously.
Does this get back to our “player’s coach”? I’m sure you could make that argument, but I’d rather side with the fact that these players are professionals, get paid a ton, and we should expect better….much better.

On the bright side
After going down 47-9, the Wizards outscored the Hornets 15-14 to finish the half.

better
They were down by more than 40… now after the end of the 3rd period… it’s only a 30 point deficit.
I like the current lineup:
McGee, Pecherov, Dominic McGuire, Dermarr Johnson and Dee Brown…
For a D-league lineup
As a Hornets fan, I feel for you guys – 3/5 of the starting lineup is out and the rest of the guys didn’t look very motivated today. :(
Do you blame all the players, the veterans or the coach for this?
I'm no commie, but the Reds shall be the best again!
Combination
But the problem isn’t losing badly – it’s the fact that the Wiz have a history of being lackadaisical and not bringing their A-game all the time. I guess the blame for that lies mostly on the coaching staff, but the veterans need to step it up too. That said, who cares. It’s a preseason game overseas and most of the players have things other than basketball on their mind (sight-seeing, having fun, etc.). I can’t really blame them, but the problem when you turn it off and on as much as this team does is that sometimes they have trouble turning it on when they really need to. I just want to see a more consistent effort this year, and getting blown out in the first quarter as bad as they did means they just didn’t take the game that seriously. Hopefully this attitude is checked at the door of the regular season, but I have my doubts.
Injuries don’t help either, but we can’t use that as an excuse.

I think it's a little bit of everything
Basically, I don’t think anyone on our team likes long flights…or German cuisine.

Actually
I like that lineup as a 2nd unit…
They brought energy, some defense, and played hard. They were able to cut into the deficit against the NO second unit….
So if that’s a D-League lineup for the Wiz, and they were beating the NO 2nd unit, what does that make the NO 2nd unit?
I just threw up a little in my mouth when I opened this thread.
But at least I didn’t spend time watching/listening to the game. Jake was right – go enjoy the beautiful autumn weather.

Yea....20 is definitely encouraging....
If Dixon doesn’t play at all this preseason, there is no way he can make the team….at least not with DerMarr Johnson able to bomb trey balls.

I hope you are right
But Ivan sez this…
Dixon, whose spot on the roster is all but guaranteed….
Is he clueless (I like Ivan, but he’s not the sharpest on rosters/contracts) or does he know something we don’t?

Game impressions:
Forget the first half… The Wizards were still in their Hotel rooms, while NO was doing a lay-up drill.
Caron Butler – (8pts, 4reb, 2 ast, 1 st, 4 TO’s) C- Poor shooting night. Settled for too many outside jumpers.
Darius Songaila – (4 pts, 7 reb, 2 ast, 1 st, 2 TO’s) D Dreadful shooting (1 for 7), looked lost on Defense.
Etan Thomas – (10 pts, 5 reb, 1 bs) C He could have rebounded better.
Dee Brown – (6 pts, 5 reb, 6 ast, 1 st, 3 TO’s) – C+ Continues to impress on the boards. Shot well. 6 dimes, was nice. But blame for the Offensive inconsistancy early in the game has to go on his shoulders.
Deshawn Stevenson – (15 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast, 1 st, 1 TO) – C Didn’t shoot well (5-13). Defense as OK, after the 1st quarter.
Dom McGuire – (1 point, 8 reb, 4 ast, 1 BS, 2 TO’s) – C Filled the stat sheet (as usual) EXCEPT points… Shot horribly (0-5). Where is this improved jump shot?
Andre Blatche – (7 pts, 5 reb, 1 ast, 1 st, 1 TO) – D We need more points from Andre…
Dermarr Johnson – (19 pts, 3 reb, 1 st, 1 bs, 3 TO’s) – B Fourth straight good game. When are the rest of you getting on the Dermarr bandwagon? (look out Juan Dixon, You may be out of a job…..)
Oleksiy Pecherov – (7 pts, 5 reb, 1 ast, 1 TO) – B If we could get that kind of production from Pech every game for 10-15 minutes, I’d be happy…
JaVale McGee – (3 pts, 3 reb, 2 bs, 1 TO) – B I liked how he played in only 11 minutes – I thought Eddie could have given him more minutes.
Linton Johnson (0,0,0,0,) – ??? The boxscore says he played 4:30….. did he play?
Encouraging signs:
The Wizards didn’t pack it in… They cut the 40 point lead down to 16… And before you say “yeah, but it was garbage time”, let’s remember this is a Preseason game – it’s ALL garbage time.
I thought McGuire, Pecherov, and Mcgee all played with energy. And when they were on the court together, they played pretty good defense. I’d like to see this lineup with Nick Young (who can create his own shot) and Dee Brown…
Dermarr Johnson had a break out game… He actually had 2 blocks, but the boxscore only shows 1. He had a number of plays where he broke down the defense and scored.
Big Oily looked good again. He was mixing it up inside more this game. (only took one 3-point shot, which he made)… Played some solid defense…
Dee Brown had a mixed game. On the one hand, you have to blame the Point Guard for the poor Offensive display in the first Quarter.. On the other hand, he had 6 points on 2 of 4 shooting, 5 rebounds and 6 assists in 30 minutes….
(Antonio Daniels averaged 8 pts, 5 ast, 3 reb for the Wizards last year in 30 mpg). He had several real nice passes for assists, and when not paired against Chris Paul, played pretty good defense – and he was key in the comeback that cut the 40 point lead to 16..
I'll jump...
on a Demarr Johnson bandwagon. J. Dixon is pretty one-dimensional and based on what I saw tonight, Demarr brings more to the table. Long guy, cuts hard to the hoop where he can finish and can hit the three. Can’t play point though and Juan is bit of an insurance policy there. So if you think Dee Brown can contribute, and I think he can, Demarr’s the man.
Dee Brown
I thought he looked great tonight, my first view since Summer League. Good energy, got guys involved, a couple of great assists. All this while going against the league (should have been) MVP. Solid 3rd PG and a spark off the bench. Keeper.
Agreed
Except for the 1st Quarter, where I though Dee forced things too much… I thought he had a good game…
That’s why I gave him a C+ (it would have been a B+ had he been better at containing CP3 or if he had a better 1st Quarter).
For a 3rd string PG forced into the Starting role, I thought he did well.
I still don’t know what magic he’s using to average almost 4.5 rebounds per game. He’s the 5th leading rebounder on the team; ahead of Blatche and Etan Thomas (what’s wrong with this picture?)
He’s been a pest on Defense (3.3 steals per game) and limited his Turn Overs.
Ideally, I’d like to see his shooting percentage (28%) go up; and I think he could be more aggressive by driving to the hole more…. but overall, I’ve liked his game.
it would have been a B+ had he been better at containing CP3
That’s asking a bit much, no? Not a single player in the NBA can do it.
by MR on Oct 15, 2008 6:22 AM EDT up reply actions
grade
His grade would have been higher IF he did only one of several things…. containing CP3 being only one of those…
He didn’t penetrate very much, though it looked like he had the opportunities…. He missed Free Throws…. He clanked a wide open 3… The 1st Quarter (and part of the 2nd) was dismal for the Wizards on Offense, and you have to blame the PG for that…. AND his defense on CP3 was not very good….
Obviously, if he had shut down CP3 (highly unlikely), he would have had a great game…. even if he just bothered him a little, it would have been nice…. but Paul did whatever he wanted in the game… to the point that Eddie put McGuire on him for a few possessions in the 3rd quarter.
Now, I don’t expect the 3rd string Point Guard to come in and shut down Chris Paul (although it would be an unexpectedly pleasant surprise)… but he should hit Free Throws, and open 3-pointers…. so his grade is C+
Oh, and by the way
It was great to see Joe Crawford out there blowing calls. A couple of times I think he must have mistaken Blatche for Duncan.
How that guy can still be working the NBA is astounding to me.
