Double Trouble for the Mavs

It's Dray Day all day at the Patriot Center (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)
The Wizards kept the good times rolling last night, improving to 2-0 in the preseason with a win over the Mavericks. Of course, when your starting lineup consists of Devin Harris, Josh Howard, Eddie Jones, Brandon Bass, and Desagana Diop it plays into the Wizards' favor. But like any game there was some good things, and some not so good things.

The Good

  • Andray Blatche! AB has looked good throughout training camp and continued to impress last night as he went for a double-double going for 12 points and 10 boards, including 4 on the offensive glass.
  • The defense held the Mavs to 42% shooting, not as good as they were against the Cavs but still better than most of last year. But they're not just keeping the shooting percentages down, they're forcing turnovers. 11 of the 15 Wizards had at least one steal tonight.
  • Brendan Haywood was impressive as well going for 10 points and 3 rebounds in 11 minutes of play.
  • Donnell Taylor redeemed himself after a dismal outing against Cleveland, going 5-10 from the field for 10 points.
  • Gilbert Arenas had a block last night, considering he averages about one block per 6 games this is a cause for celebration.
  • Caron Butler had the best outing of the Big 3, putting up 10 points, 4 boards, and 3 steals in 17 minutes.
The Bad
  • Arenas, Jamison, and Stevenson combined for 8 points on 2 of 13 shooting. That might work out with the Mavericks B team, but they have to get it going before the season starts. While everyone keeps saying that Arenas is fully healed from that knee injury, you have to be concerned after two less than average performances out of him.
  • Free-throw shooting again wasn't up to par, the Wizards only shot 67% from the stripe.
  • It's clear that Nick Young is still going to need some time, he looked a little better tonight with 10 points and a pair of assists but he also had 3 turnovers and picked up 6 fouls in only 18 minutes.
  • While the Wizards' D was quite good, the Wizards only shot 36% from the field.
The Ugly Tonight we'll get to see for the first time how the Wizards do on short rest as the play again tonight at Philadelphia. We'll also get to see Calvin Booth in a Sixers jersey for the first time, I'm sure it won't feel right.

My observations
First things first: Libby loved the game, and the Mason student band totally rocked. It turns out our free seats were in the 8th row rather than the second (our tix were for row B, and I didn't realize there were so many letters that precede "A" in the alphabet).

Anyways, here's what I thought about my first good look at the 07-08 Wiz:

  1. Preseason basketball is in no way about the established players. Arenas and Jamison looked awful, and their numbers were worse, but no one cares, because no one expects them to play hard when nothing is on the line. We already know what they can do. Both limited themselves almost exclusively to outside shots, and few of them went in. No biggie.

  2. Blatche looked terrific. He was very active and effective on both boards, and even when he didn't manage to grab a few offensive boards, the effort he made to get his hands (at the ends of his very long arms) on the ball kept the Wiz in possession at least a couple of times. He needs to play with at least this level of intensity for, say, the next 15 years (preferably as a Wizard)). He also blocked and altered a few shots and was generally disruptive on defense, although apparently Nick Fazekas is the next Larry Bird, based on how hard The Tarantula bit on a couple of the rookie's head fakes (followed by Fazekas making much easier jump shots).

  3. Pecherov belongs. He's not nearly as quick and bouncy as Blatche, but he was very active on the boards. He finished with 5 boards, including one that he converted into a nice putback dunk. He also drained a pair of outside shots, including a 3-pointer (he has a quick, smooth release). What impressed me most was how hard he ran. One thing you see with European big men is that when they're running in transition, they sometimes look like they're a gear slower than everyone else -- sort of like they're running in sand. Not Shaggy. He ran hard almost every single play and looked every bit as fast as everyone else.

  4. Donell Taylor is pissin me off. When Taylor got into the game, I told a buddy who attended the game with me how little I thought of Donell. He proceeded to his shot after shot and generally look like a solid player. I guess there's a reason Ernie's a GM and I'm some dork commenting on a blog.

  5. Taser didn't do much. He seemed to let the game come to him, and it just didn't come that much. He hoisted up four shots, hitting only one, and grabbed some nice rebounds, but he didn't make much of an impact. Mike Hall looked better. Laser played sort of the opposite game. He forced things in  a few cases, and despite his obvious talent (cripes he's fast, and he has a nice shooting stroke), he finished with some sloppy turnovers and had several shots blocked.

  6. The popcorn at the Patriot Center is pretty lousy.
"Now, obviously individual production does not unilaterally equal better team production, but there's a high level of causation."
